Medical Description

Salisone H Oint ointment is used for psoriasis and eczema, which can cause itchy, red, dry or scaly patches on the skin. It contains a combination of betamethasone, a strong steroid for short-term use as prescribed, and salicylic acid, which softens thickened surface scales. The steroid calms skin inflammation, while salicylic acid loosens dead skin so the affected area becomes smoother and the steroid can reach it better. Apply Salisone H ointment as a thin layer to affected skin for external use only, avoiding the face and sensitive areas unless a doctor specifically advises it.

Uses

  • Psoriasis: Thick, itchy scales form when skin cells build up; salicylic acid softens the scale while betamethasone calms inflammation and discomfort.
  • Eczema: Dry, rough, red and itchy patches can become less inflamed as betamethasone reduces swelling and salicylic acid softens surface scale.

Avoid broken skin, large areas, the face, groin and skin folds unless a doctor specifically advises it. Do not cover treated skin with an airtight dressing unless directed.

Side effects

  • Burning: Betamethasone or salicylic acid may cause stinging or warmth soon after application. Stop applying the ointment and ask your doctor if the sensation is severe.

  • Redness: The treated skin may look red during a flare or after irritation. Stop use and seek medical advice if redness spreads or becomes painful.
  • Skin thinning: Long or heavy use of this strong steroid can cause thinning, stretch marks or colour changes. Do not extend treatment without medical review.

Missed a Dose

If you miss an application, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one. Do not apply extra product to make up for it.

How does this medicine work?

Betamethasone is a strong steroid that reduces the skin's inflammatory response, easing redness, swelling and itching. Salicylic acid is a scale-softening ingredient that loosens and removes thickened dead skin cells. This can smooth the affected area and help betamethasone reach inflamed skin.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Salisone H ointment works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, no specific interaction is established, but using another steroid or salicylic acid product on the same area may increase irritation or absorption.
