Uses
- As per USFDA, Risnia Plus tablet is an antipsychotic medicine indicated for the treatment of:
- Schizophrenia in adults and adolescents; this medicine manages both positive and negative symptoms like hallucination, delusions, lack of pleasure, memory problems, cognitive problems, etc.
- Short-term treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder in adults, children and adolescents aged 10-17 years.
- Irritability related to autistic disorder in children and adolescents aged 5-16 years.
Contraindications
- Do not take Risnia Plus tablets or take with caution:
- If you have a known allergy to risperidone or any component of Risnia Plus tablets.
- If you are an older adult with dementia-related psychosis. There is an increased risk of death.
- If you are under treatment with other antipsychotic medication.
- If you have neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a neuromuscular disorder).
- If you have tardive dyskinesia (sudden jerky movements).
- If you have diabetes and uncontrolled glucose levels.
- If you have a tumour on your adrenal gland (a condition called pheochromocytoma)
- If you have been diagnosed with a prolactin-dependent tumour; this medicine can increase prolactin levels.
- If you have a history of seizure disorder.
- If you have a low white blood cell count (leukopenia or neutropenia).
- If you have an adrenal gland tumour; this medicine can cause life-threatening high blood pressure.
- If you are pregnant or are planning a pregnancy.

- You have suicidal or self-harming thoughts.
- You are using any herbal or Ayurvedic medicines or supplements; some of them can interfere with this medicine.
- You are an older adult over 65; the effects of this medicine can be exaggerated in this age group. Use with caution.
- You have diabetes; keep a check on your blood glucose levels as this medicine can cause fluctuations in blood glucose levels.
- You have low blood pressure; this medicine causes orthostatic hypotension (sudden lowering of blood pressure with change in position).
- You have priapism (prolonged erection of the penis).
Directions for Use
- Take Risnia Plus tablets exactly as prescribed by the doctor.
- Do not exceed the prescribed dosage of Risnia Plus medicine, even if you cannot feel its effects.
- Swallow the tablet as a whole with a glass of water; do not break or chew it.
- Do not try to take it with other medicines without informing your doctor.
- Take Risnia Plus tablets with or without food.
- Do not use this medication if the package has been already opened.
- Do not suddenly stop taking Risnia Plus tablets as this can cause adverse effects.

Interactions with other medicines
- Risnia Plus tablets with levodopa (used for Parkinson's disease) may have opposite effects.
- Use caution if you take medicines that lower high blood pressure; the combination of these two medicines can cause very low blood pressure.
- Use caution if you take medicines that lower potassium in the body, like laxatives, diuretics, etc.; Risnia Plus tablets can lower potassium further and cause side effects.
- Medicines like fluoxetine and paroxetine can increase the levels of Risnia Plus medicine in the body.
- Use caution if you take tablets that lower heart rate; Risnia Plus can further reduce the heart rate.
- Other antipsychotics, anti-seizure medications, or antidepressants along with Risnia Plus tablets can result in severe effects.
- Use caution if you use other sedatives, antimalarial medicines, heart medicines, anti-allergy medicines, etc. On interaction, all of them can cause increased drowsiness.
