Medical Description

Rhymex capsule is used in the management of ventricular arrhythmias and ectopic beats such as those found after myocardial infarction and in ischaemic heart disease. It is an antiarrhythmic medicine with mexiletine as the active ingredient. It works by blocking certain electrical signals in the heart that can cause an irregular heartbeat. Rhymex capsule is taken by mouth with water in doses prescribed by your doctor. Common side effects of Rhymex capsule include heartburn, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, lightheadedness, tremor, difficulty with coordination, weakness, tiredness, nervousness, and changes in sleep, appetite or taste. In case you develop symptoms like a rapid, slow or irregular heartbeat, fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, swelling of the ankles or legs, seizures, severe skin rash or peeling, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain, or unusual bruising, bleeding or fever, immediately report it to your doctor. Before treatment, tell your doctor about any medical condition that affects you, especially heart problems, low blood pressure, liver problems, seizure disorders, low potassium levels, or allergy to lidocaine or similar local anaesthetics. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins, supplements and herbal products you use. People receiving treatment need regular monitoring of heart rhythm, liver function and blood counts as suggested by their doctors.

  • Combining Rhymex with lidocaine or tocainide may increase side effects involving the nervous system.
  • Combining it with other antiarrhythmic medicines such as quinidine, procainamide or disopyramide may have additive effects, and your doctor may need to adjust the dose.
  • Medicines that speed up liver enzymes, such as phenytoin, rifampicin and phenobarbital, can lower the level of mexiletine. Your doctor may need to change your dose when these medicines are started or stopped.

  • Mexiletine may raise theophylline levels, which can cause nausea, vomiting and tremor. Your doctor may monitor theophylline levels and lower the dose.
