Medical Description

Phenasol injection is an antipsychotic medication. Treating symptoms of people with chronic schizophrenia (a mental illness that causes disturbed or unusual thinking, loss of interest in life, and strong or inappropriate emotions) is the main use of Phenasol injection. It is sometimes used to control behaviour problems in patients with psychosis, such as hallucinations, delusions, and hostility. The main active ingredient in Phenasol injections is Fluphenazine. It belongs to the typical antipsychotics class of medication. The mode of action of Phenasol injections is by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain by increasing the function of a certain chemical messenger. This injection is not indicated for children below 12 years of age. It is a long-acting antipsychotic medication, so dosage should be given accordingly, especially in elderly patients. Some of the more common side effects of Phenasol injections include dry mouth, stomach upset, sleeping problems, etc. This injection should not be given to elderly patients with dementia and psychotic episodes, as it can increase the risk of death in them.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Phenasol injection consists of Fluphenazine as its active ingredient. It belongs to the class of medicines known as conventional antipsychotics. Thioridazine works by increasing dopamine activity by blocking its receptors. This chemical messenger is responsible for mood, ability, and cognitive behaviour. By intercepting these receptors, the effect of these substances lasts longer, which helps improve the positive symptoms of schizophrenia, such as hallucinations, delusions, etc.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • vDo not take any medications that may cause slow or irregular heartbeat, high or low blood pressure, changes in heart rate, and other heart-related conditions.
  • Avoid medicines like diuretics and laxatives that lower blood potassium or magnesium levels because Phenasol injections can further lower potassium levels and cause severe heart rhythm disorders.
  • Phenasol injections are not recommended along with other antipsychotic, antidepressant, or anti-seizure medications. Using Phenasol injections with these medicines can cause severe adverse effects.
  • Try to be cautious with the dosage of Phenasol injections if using opioid pain relievers, sedatives, heart medicines, antimalarial medicines, antihistamines (cetirizine), etc. They can interact with Phenasol injections and cause increased drowsiness and other side effects.
  • Using propranolol with Phenasol injections can increase the plasma concentration of Fluphenazine in the body and cause overdose symptoms.

Interactions with food items

  • Try to avoid eating spicy food while on treatment with Phenasol injections. It is recommended to take an easily digestible diet.
