Immediately seek medical care at a tertiary centre in cases of an overdose.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

The pharmacological component of Paxotus Plus is a combination of medications called Clonazepam and Paroxetine. One of the main causes of depression is a decrease in the amount of a chemical known as Serotonin in the brain. Paroxetine is a selective serotonin-reuptake inhibitor, which enhances the activity of the available serotonin in the brain. This, in turn, will reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety. Clonazepam is a derivative of a group of medications called benzodiazepines. It acts by increasing the activity of a certain chemical in the brain called GABA (gamma-amino-butyric acid). GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. It is a chemical that sends suppressing signals to the nerves in the part of the body in which it is secreted. In people suffering from anxiety and depression, there is an excessive and abnormal activity of nerve cells in the brain. This activity can be suppressed by increasing the activity of GABA in the brain.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Co-administration of Tranylcypromine or any other monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, as the risk or severity of adverse effects can be increased. Taking them within 14 days of treatment is also contraindicated.
  • Co-administration with Tapentadol or other medications that increase the level of serotonin is not recommended, as lt may increase the central nervous system depressant effects of the medicine and may precipitate a dangerous side effect called Serotonin Syndrome.
  • Co-administration with other benzodiazepines and strong painkillers like Tramadol is not recommended as it can potentiate its actions.
  • Co-administration with warfarin, NSAIDs (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicines), aspirin, or other medicines affecting coagulation is not recommended as this may lead to an increased risk of bleeding.
  • The metabolism of Clonazepam and Paroxetine may be decreased with certain medicines. This may lead to their actions being prolonged. Co-administration of these medicines, including Cimetidine, Amoxicillin, etc., is not recommended.
  • The metabolism of Clonazepam and Paroxetine may be increased with certain medicines. This may lead to a decrease in its efficacy. Co-administration of these medicines, including rifampicin, linezolid, etc., is not recommended.
