Medical Description

Patricetam Gpc tablet is a prescription medicine containing two ingredients, alpha GPC, also called choline alfoscerate, and piracetam. It is used in the supportive management of difficulties with memory, attention and concentration that accompany reduced blood flow to the brain or age-related cognitive decline. Alpha GPC is a source of choline that crosses into the brain and is used to make acetylcholine, the chemical messenger most closely involved in memory and learning, and it is also incorporated into the membranes of nerve cells. Piracetam acts on nerve cell membranes and on blood flow, improving the flexibility of red blood cells, reducing the clumping of platelets and easing spasm in small vessels, which together improve the microcirculation of the brain. Patricetam Gpc tablet is taken by mouth as directed by your doctor. Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food, and keep taking it for as long as your doctor advises, since any benefit builds gradually over weeks rather than days. It may cause side effects such as nausea, heartburn, diarrhoea, headache, nervousness, restlessness, drowsiness and weight gain. Inform your doctor if you feel agitated or unusually irritable, or if your mood changes. Because piracetam affects how platelets clump together, tell your doctor if you have or had a history of a bleeding disorder, take a blood thinner, or have surgery or dental work planned. Inform your doctor about any kidney problem, as the amount of medicne may need reduction, and any history of bleeding into the brain, as this medicine would not then be suitable.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Patricetam Gpc tablet is not recommended during pregnancy unless your doctor considers it necessary, as there is limited safety information. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, think you may be, or are planning a pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Patricetam Gpc tablet is not recommended while breastfeeding, as piracetam passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor, who will advise whether to stop the medicine or stop breastfeeding.

Driving

Driving

Patricetam Gpc tablet can cause drowsiness, dizziness and restlessness in some people. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you, particularly bearing in mind the condition for which it has been prescribed.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Limit alcohol while taking Patricetam Gpc tablet. Alcohol impairs memory, attention and coordination, which works directly against the purpose of this medicine, and adds to drowsiness.

  • You have had a brain haemorrhage.
  • You feel agitated, restless or unusually drowsy, or notice changes in mood, as these have been reported with this type of medicine.
  • You are elderly, as your kidney function will be checked before and during treatment.
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Directions for Use

Interactions with other medicines

  • Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements and herbal products you use before starting Patricetam Gpc tablet, and before any surgery or dental procedure.

  • Thyroid hormone preparations have been reported to cause confusion and irritability when combined with piracetam.
  • Tell your doctor if you take any medicine that affects the brain, including sedatives, antipsychotics or antidepressants, as effects on alertness and mood may add together.

Interactions with food items

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

It is used in the supportive management of memory, attention and concentration difficulties associated with reduced blood flow to the brain and age-related cognitive decline. The piracetam component is also licensed as an add-on treatment for myoclonus arising from the cortex.
Any improvement builds gradually over weeks rather than days, so keep taking it as prescribed and discuss progress at your review rather than judging it early.
The piracetam component reduces the clumping of platelets, so it can add to the effect of warfarin, aspirin or clopidogrel. Mention it before any surgery or dental work as well.
Piracetam is removed from the body by the kidneys. If kidney function is reduced, the amount has to be lowered, and it is not suitable at all in severe kidney impairment.
