Medical Description

Ostovet Forte supplementation helps improve the overall health of the cattle, especially during pregnancy, calving and lactation. It also improves the reproduction of lactating cows. The health of the newborn calf also improves when cattle are given supplementation throughout the lactation period. Ostovet Forte has calcium and Vit D3 that helps prevent a reduction in the milk quantity for lactating cows. Ostovet Forte is a nutritional supplement for dairy cattle and is available in liquid form. Pets and cattle may develop nutritional deficiency seen as a loss of appetite, muscle twitching, weakness, subnormal temperature, increased heart rate, reduced fertility, reduced milk production, excitement and convulsions. Adding Ostovet Forte to the feed helps improve the nutritional value of the feed. The minerals, vitamins, and peptides in Ostovet Forte increase calcium levels in pregnant cows, especially during calving time and lactation. The phosphorus in Ostovet Forte helps in proper mobilisation of energy and helps maintain good bone strength.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • The quantity of Ostovet Forte given to the cattle should be according to the advice of the veterinary doctor. It should not be increased just to increase the milk yield.
  • Do not give it during milk fever without consulting the veterinarian.
  • If you observe shuffling of the hind legs and restlessness of the cattle, inform the doctor.
  • An acidogenic diet should be avoided as it leads to demineralisation of bone and depletion of calcium and phosphorus.

Directions for Use

  • Add Ostovet Forte liquid to the feed in proportions as advised by the veterinarian.
  • Usually, one to two litres of Ostovet Forte is added to 50 kilograms of cattle feed.
  • It can also be added to the drinking water in the proportions recommended by the doctor.
  • Do not add more than is advised to increase the yield of milk. This may be harmful to the cattle.
  • You should train the caretaker of the cattle herd about the right proportions of its dosage.

Storage and disposal

Ostovet Forte should be stored in the same container in which it was supplied. It should be stored at room temperature. It should not be kept along with the food items for human consumption. Special care should be taken to keep it out of reach of children. Left-over Ostovet Forte should be disposed of appropriately, keeping environmental factors in mind.

Dosage

Overdose

Symptoms of overdosage are abnormalities of bone development, stone formation in the urinary bladder, soft tissue hardening, severe vomiting, diarrhoea, lack of appetite, weakness and metabolic acidosis. If you observe any such symptoms in your cattle, immediately rush it to the nearest vet and get it checked out.

Missed a Dose

If you have forgotten to add Ostovet Forte liquid to the feed or drinking water of the cattle, then it can be mixed in the next feed. However, you should not mix double quantities in the same feed to make for the last missed dosage.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Ostovet Forte gets absorbed quickly from the rumen of the cattle. Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium. Calcium and phosphorus act on the bones and muscle tissues and get stored there in a dissolved and locked form. The calcium levels in cattle’s blood are very low, up to 3-4 grams, but is high in the muscle tissues and bones. The stored quantity of calcium in the muscle tissue is around 9 grams, and as much quantity is stored in a dissolved form in the bones. The dissolved form in the bones is drawn quickly as needed. Phosphorus is absorbed through the large intestine and gets stored in the bones and spaces between the cells. It helps in the mobilisation of energy and metabolic activity. Ostovet Forte ingredients act on the bones and certain enzymes in the cattle’s body and help regulate the metabolism, working of the muscles and nerves, strengthening of the bones and teeth, utilisation of energy, and improving immunity.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Parathyroid hormone
  • Calcitonin

Interactions with food items

  • Sign of phosphorus toxicity may be found in the grazing cattle taking phosphorus supplementation in the areas where phosphorus content is high in the grass.
  • High iron content in drinking water may lead to reduced absorption of phosphorus.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Calcium and phosphorus deficiency in the diet of the cattle may lead to weakness of the bones and muscles, swelling of the muscles, bleeding disorder, lack of appetite, decreased milk production and decreased energy levels.

Phosphorus is given in oral form by adding it to the dairy ration. It should be given in the proportions as advised by the veterinarian. It is also available in liquid form that can be added to the drinking water. It can be added to the pastures for the grazing animals, keeping environmental factors in mind.

Calcium is given in the vein when the cattle have severe calcium deficiency, as in milk fever. It is also given as an oral calcium bolus. Oral liquid calcium is also available that is added to the cattle feed in the doses as suggested by the veterinarian.

Milk fever develops in cattle due to the deficiency of calcium. It causes weakness of the bones and muscles, inability to stand, shifting of weight from one hind leg to the other and excitability. It usually occurs at the time of calf birth or within 24 hours to 3 days of calf birth. Severe deficiency or untreated condition can result in the dead born calf or even sudden cow death.
