How does this medicine work?

Amoxicillin kills bacteria by disrupting their cell wall formation. Some bacteria produce beta-lactamase, an enzyme that destroys amoxicillin before it can work. Clavulanic acid blocks this enzyme, allowing amoxicillin to work against these resistant bacteria. Lactic acid helps maintain beneficial gut bacteria.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Tell your doctor about all medicines the child is taking. Some medicines may affect how this antibiotic works. In particular, this medicine may affect the effectiveness of certain oral contraceptives in adolescent girls.

Interactions with food items

This medicine can be given with or without food. Giving it with food improves absorption and reduces the risk of stomach upset.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects amoxicillin from being destroyed by bacteria. This allows amoxicillin to work against bacteria that would otherwise resist it, making the combination more effective.
Add the specified amount of water to the dry powder as instructed on the package. Shake well to mix thoroughly. Store the reconstituted suspension in the refrigerator and use within the expiry period listed on the package.
Diarrhoea can occur because this antibiotic may kill some beneficial bacteria in the gut. The lactic acid component helps restore these bacteria. Ensure your child drinks plenty of fluids and inform your doctor if diarrhoea is severe or bloody.
