Medical Description

Ocal suspension is a nutritional supplement used to support calcium and vitamin D intake for bone health in adults and children when recommended by a doctor. It contains calcium carbonate from an oyster shell source and cholecalciferol, also called vitamin D3. Calcium supplies a mineral needed for bones and teeth, while vitamin D3 helps the body absorb and use calcium. It may help when the diet does not provide enough of these nutrients. Shake Ocal suspension well, measure it and take it by mouth as directed. It is not a substitute for a varied, balanced diet.

Uses

  • Low calcium intake: When food does not provide enough calcium, Ocal suspension supplements the mineral needed for normal bones, teeth and muscle function.
  • Vitamin D intake: Ocal suspension may help meet vitamin D needs when dietary intake is low, supporting the body's normal calcium balance.
  • Bone health: Adequate calcium and vitamin D may help maintain bone strength as part of a varied, balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this product, do not use it. Ask a doctor before using Ocal suspension if you have high calcium levels, kidney stones, severe kidney disease or a condition that causes excess vitamin D or calcium. Do not exceed the recommended amount.

Side effects

  • Nausea or stomach discomfort: Calcium carbonate can irritate the stomach, causing queasiness or an unsettled feeling after use. Seek advice if symptoms are severe or persistent.
  • Constipation: Calcium may slow bowel movements, leading to harder stools or difficulty passing them. Increase fibre if suitable and contact a doctor for severe pain or prolonged constipation.

Quick Tips

  • Shake Ocal suspension well before measuring it.
  • Use the supplied measuring cup rather than a household spoon.
  • Tell your doctor about all other calcium, vitamin D and mineral products you use.
  • Drink suitable fluids unless a doctor has restricted your fluid intake, especially if you have a history of stones.
  • Do not give Ocal suspension to a child unless a doctor or health worker recommends it.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much Ocal suspension may cause nausea, constipation, thirst, frequent urination, weakness or confusion. If you think you have taken too much of this product, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Calcium carbonate provides calcium for normal bone and tooth maintenance. Cholecalciferol, or vitamin D3, helps the intestine absorb calcium and supports the body's use of this mineral. Together, they help maintain calcium balance and support bone health.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Ocal suspension works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention thyroid medicines, tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, iron supplements, bisphosphonates, digoxin, diuretics and other calcium or vitamin D products. Calcium can reduce absorption of several medicines, so a pharmacist may advise a time gap.

Interactions with food items

Calcium absorption may be affected by very high intake of bran or foods containing oxalates. Follow a balanced diet and tell your doctor about other calcium or vitamin D supplements.
