Medical Description

Mpill Tablet is used by women as an emergency contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancy. It should not be used as a regular contraceptive method. This medication can be used when other contraceptive method fails (broken condom) or when contraception is not used. Mpill Tablet should be consumed within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse for it to work. Mpill Tablet contains levonorgestrel as its active component. It belongs to the progestins class of medications. It works by changing hormonal levels that prevent the release of an egg from the ovary, or it stops the fertilisation of the egg by the sperm cells. It can also work by causing changes in the lining of the uterus, which prevents the fertilised egg from attaching so it cannot develop. This medication does not stop pregnancy if you are already pregnant. Mpill also does not protect from sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia, gonorrhoea, HIV, etc. This medicine may not work in some women who are obese or currently using medication that interfere with its function. Mpill Tablet works best if you take this medicine as soon as possible after the intercourse. This tablet is also known as the morning-after pill.

How Does It Work?

Mpill has a single active ingredient, levonorgestrel. It belongs to the progestins class of medications. It works by binding to receptors of progesterone and androgen(hormones). This slows down the release of certain hormones that are responsible for ovulation (release of the egg from the ovary). Once the levels of these hormones fall, ovulation does not occur, which prevents pregnancy. This medicine also prevents fertilisation of the egg and the sperm. It also causes changes in the lining of the uterus to prevent the development of the pregnancy.
