Medical Description

Lyxumia Pre Filled solution for injection is used with diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It contains lixisenatide, which acts like a natural gut hormone and helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is high. It also slows stomach emptying and reduces glucagon, a hormone that signals the liver to release sugar. Lyxumia Pre Filled solution for injection is injected under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm after a healthcare professional teaches you how to use the pen.

Uses

  • Type 2 diabetes: Helps lower high blood sugar in adults when used with diet, exercise and the diabetes plan prescribed by a doctor.
  • After-meal blood sugar control: Slows the movement of food from the stomach and helps reduce sharp rises in blood sugar after eating.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. It is not intended for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, a dangerous acid build-up caused by a lack of insulin. Tell your doctor if you have had pancreatitis, severe stomach-emptying problems, kidney disease, gallbladder disease or diabetes-related eye complications.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Slower stomach emptying can cause queasiness, particularly when treatment begins. Seek advice if nausea prevents you from drinking or eating normally.
  • Vomiting: Delayed stomach emptying may lead to vomiting and fluid loss. Seek urgent medical advice if vomiting continues or you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Diarrhoea: Changes in digestion may cause loose stools during treatment. Drink suitable fluids and seek advice for severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea.
  • Low blood sugar: The risk is higher with insulin or certain diabetes medicines, causing sweating, shaking, confusion or weakness. Follow your doctor's low-sugar plan promptly.
  • Injection-site reaction: Redness, itching or soreness may occur where the pen is used. Rotate sites and report worsening swelling or signs of infection.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or become pregnant. Your doctor will decide whether Lyxumia injection should be used.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Ask your doctor before using Lyxumia injection while breastfeeding because information about its passage into breast milk is limited.

Driving

Driving

Low blood sugar or dizziness can affect driving. Do not drive until your blood sugar and symptoms are controlled and you are fully alert.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Limit alcohol because it may worsen low blood sugar and other unwanted effects.

Directions for Use

Use Lyxumia injection under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm as taught by your doctor. Use a new sterile needle and rotate injection sites. Check the liquid before use, and do not use the pen if it is cloudy, discoloured or contains particles. Do not share the pen or needles.

Storage and disposal

Store the unopened Lyxumia pen as directed on the pack and protect it from freezing, excessive heat and light. Keep it away from children. Dispose of used needles and pens in an approved sharps container as advised by your healthcare professional.

Quick Tips

  • Use Lyxumia injection only after receiving training on the pen.
  • Check the liquid before each injection and never use a cloudy or particle-filled solution.
  • Rotate injection sites to reduce skin irritation.
  • Never share the pen or needles with another person.
  • Carry a fast source of sugar if your doctor says you are at risk of low blood sugar.
  • Follow the recommended diet, activity plan and blood sugar checks.

Dosage

Overdose

An overdose may cause severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea or low blood sugar. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The active ingredient lixisenatide acts like a natural hormone released after meals. It helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar is high, slows stomach emptying and reduces the signal that tells the liver to release more sugar.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Lyxumia injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention insulin and sulfonylureas because they can increase the risk of low blood sugar. Also mention oral medicines such as antibiotics, oral contraceptives, medicines requiring rapid absorption and gatifloxacin because delayed stomach emptying or changes in blood sugar may alter their effects.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. Follow the meal plan advised for your diabetes and discuss any major dietary changes with your doctor.
