Medical Description

Kidsvue eye drop is used mainly to slow down the worsening of near-sightedness (difficulty seeing distant objects) in children. Its active ingredient is atropine. Used in a low strength over time, it can help keep near-sightedness from getting worse as a child grows. In an eye clinic, atropine is also used to widen the pupil for an eye examination and to rest an inflamed eye.

Uses

  • Slowing the worsening of near-sightedness in children
  • Widening the pupil for an eye examination
  • Resting an inflamed eye

Contraindications

Do not use these eye drops in your child if they are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine. They should not be used if your child has a type of raised eye pressure called narrow-angle glaucoma. Tell your child's doctor before use if your child has any heart problems, or a condition such as Down syndrome or a brain injury, as they may be more sensitive to this medicine.

Side effects

  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Stinging in the eye
  • Redness of the eye
  • Widened pupils

Directions for Use

This medicine is specially designed for use in children and should be used under adult supervision. Wash your hands before use. Gently pull down the lower eyelid, put in the exact number of drops your child's doctor has advised, and have your child close the eye for two to three minutes. Do not let the dropper tip touch the eye, eyelid, or any surface, as this can spread infection. Wipe away any extra liquid with a clean tissue. If your child uses another eye medicine, keep a gap of a few minutes between them.

Storage and disposal

Store the eye drop at room temperature, away from direct sunlight. Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use. Once opened, do not keep it for longer than the time your pharmacist advises, and throw away any leftover medicine. Keep it out of the sight and reach of children.

Quick Tips

  • Use the drops only in the eye your child's doctor has advised, and use the exact number of drops.
  • Do not touch the dropper tip to the eye or any surface, to keep it clean.
  • Your child's eyes may be more sensitive to light, so sunglasses outdoors can help.
  • Keep up with your child's regular eye check-ups during treatment.
  • Do not save opened drops beyond the time your pharmacist advises.

Dosage

Overdose

If the drops are swallowed by mistake, this can cause a dry mouth, flushed skin, a fast heartbeat, and confusion. If you think your child has used or swallowed too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

This medicine acts on the small muscles inside the eye. It relaxes the muscle that controls the size of the pupil, which makes the pupil widen, and it eases the muscle the eye uses to focus on close objects. In children who are becoming near-sighted, using a low strength regularly is thought to slow the changes in the eye that make near-sightedness worse. When the pupil is widened, an eye doctor can also see the back of the eye more clearly during an examination.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Kidsvue eye drop works. Tell your child's doctor about all the medicines and eye products your child uses. In particular, mention it if your child is using any other eye drops, as these may need to be given a few minutes apart so each one works properly.
