Medical Description

Glygenta cream is a prescription medicine used for certain bacterial skin infections with redness and inflammation, including infected dermatitis or eczema. It contains a combination of betamethasone, a strong steroid for short-term use as prescribed, and gentamicin, an antibiotic. Betamethasone calms skin inflammation, while gentamicin helps control susceptible bacteria. The cream is applied as a thin layer to affected skin and is for external use only. It is intended for short-term treatment when both inflammation and a susceptible bacterial infection are present.

Uses

  • Bacterial skin infections with inflammation: Gentamicin helps control susceptible bacteria while betamethasone reduces associated redness, swelling and itching.
  • Infected dermatitis: The cream may be prescribed when inflamed dermatitis has a diagnosed bacterial infection requiring combined treatment.
  • Infected eczema: It may relieve inflammation and help control bacterial infection in eczema when specifically prescribed.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Use Glygenta cream only for a diagnosed bacterial infection for which it was prescribed. Do not use it for viral skin infections such as cold sores or chickenpox, fungal infections, acne, rosacea, simple pimples or unexplained itching without redness. Do not apply it to the eyes, nose, ears, around the mouth, back, private parts or broken skin unless a doctor specifically advises it.

Side effects

  • Burning or pain: The treated skin may sting or feel sore soon after application, especially when it is already inflamed. Stop using it if this becomes severe.
  • Irritation or redness: Betamethasone or gentamicin may make the application area irritated or red. Seek advice if the reaction spreads or worsens.
  • Itching or dryness: The treated area may feel itchy or dry during use. Stop applying the cream if these symptoms become marked or persistent.
  • Skin thinning: Betamethasone can thin the skin, cause stretch marks or change skin colour after long or heavy use. Use it only for the prescribed short period.
  • Allergic reaction: A rash, swelling or worsening irritation may indicate sensitivity to an ingredient. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Directions for Use

For external use only. Wash and dry the affected area, then apply a thin layer of Glygenta cream to healthy skin free from cuts and wounds, as prescribed. Wash your hands before and after application unless your hands are being treated. Do not cover the area with a tight dressing unless advised. Avoid the eyes and rinse with clean water if accidental contact occurs.

Storage and disposal

Store Glygenta cream at room temperature away from heat and moisture. Keep the tube closed and out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use it after expiry.

Quick Tips

  • Use Glygenta cream only on the diagnosed skin condition for which it was prescribed.
  • Apply a thin layer and do not cover it tightly unless your doctor advises this.
  • Keep it away from the eyes, face, acne and broken skin.
  • Do not use this strong steroid cream in children unless a doctor advises it.
  • Stop and seek advice if the infection worsens or the skin becomes very thin or painful.

Dosage

Overdose

If extra Glygenta cream is applied, gently wipe away the excess. If a large amount gets into the mouth or eyes by accident, rinse with water. If you think you have used too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you miss an application, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one. Do not apply extra product to make up for it.

How does this medicine work?

Betamethasone is a strong steroid that reduces the body's inflammatory response, helping lessen redness, swelling and itching. Gentamicin interferes with the ability of susceptible bacteria to make proteins needed for growth. Together, they address selected bacterial infection and inflammation on the skin.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Glygenta cream works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention erythromycin, ritonavir and itraconazole, because these medicines may increase steroid exposure or alter treatment effects, especially when the cream is used over large areas or for a prolonged period.
