Medical Description

Gelaspan injection is used for short-term replacement of fluid and electrolytes, which are essential body salts, after trauma or fluid loss. It contains a balanced combination of sodium chloride, sodium lactate, potassium chloride and calcium chloride. These components help restore water and salt balance, support circulation, and maintain normal muscle, nerve and heart function. Gelaspan injection is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, where your response and fluid levels can be monitored. It must not be self-injected.

Uses

  • Fluid and electrolyte imbalance: When body water or mineral levels fall out of balance, the solution supplies sodium, potassium, calcium and lactate under medical supervision.
  • Dehydration requiring hospital care: Intravenous fluid can restore hydration when monitored replacement is needed and drinking is not suitable.

Too much intravenous fluid or electrolytes can cause swelling, breathing difficulty, blood pressure changes or abnormal heart rhythms. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Sodium chloride helps maintain fluid balance and circulation. Sodium lactate contributes to fluid replacement and can help the body manage mild excess acidity. Potassium chloride supports normal heart and muscle activity, while calcium chloride supports muscle movement, nerve signals and blood clotting. Together, these electrolytes help restore the body's fluid and mineral balance.

In particular, mention medicines that affect potassium, sodium, calcium or fluid balance, water tablets, medicines for heart failure, medicines for high blood pressure and treatments that affect kidney function.
