Medical Description

Epcon is a prescription medication. It is primarily used to treat anxiety, panic disorders, and seizure disorders (epilepsy). The pharmacological component of Epcon is Clonazepam. Seizures occur due to abnormal, uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain and can have many symptoms. Some of these symptoms can include abnormal movements, loss of consciousness, uprolling of eyes, loss of control of urination and defecation etc. Seizure disorders may require long term treatment with anticonvulsants. Anxiety is a condition characterised by increased worry and fear about routine situations. Anxiety can present with increased heart rate, sweating, restlessness, trembling, increased rate of breathing etc. Panic disorder is also a type of anxiety disorder with loss of control and fear. It is important to note that Clonazepam has habit-forming potential and maybe misused. Careful monitoring while on this medication is required and necessary. Epcon should be taken as recommended by the doctor. It should not be abruptly started or stopped, as it may cause withdrawal effects. Taking the tablet at the same time every day is advisable for maximum efficacy.

Pregnancy

Clonazepam is unsafe in pregnancy. It is a class D drug. Class D means Use in life-threatening emergencies when no safer drug is available. Positive evidence of human fetal risk. Discuss with your treating physician for more information. Speak to your doctor regarding your pregnancy or intention to conceive.

Driving

This medication can cause side effects such as drowsiness, sleepiness, fatigue, decreased coordination, dizziness etc. Hence driving and use of heavy machinery are not recommended.

Alcohol

Using clonazepam with other CNS depressants, like alcohol, increases the risk of respiratory depression, low blood pressure, and death. It is strictly contraindicated.

Directions for Use

  • Epcon tablet should be taken as prescribed by your treating physician.
  • It's recommended to take this medication regularly, i.e., at the same time every day, for optimal pharmacological effects of this medication.
  • Swallow the tablet as a whole. Don't crush, chew or break this tablet.
  • It's recommended to finish the full course of this medication as prescribed by your treating doctor.
  • Abrupt stoppage of Epcon can cause withdrawal side effects. Consult your doctor before stopping this medication.

Storage and disposal

Store Epcon tablet in a cool and dry place away from direct light and moisture. Do not use the medicine after the date of expiration. Keep Epcon tablets away from children and pets. Don't flush the medication down the toilet. Dispose of it with biomedical waste only.

Dosage

Overdose

The overdose symptoms develop rapidly. Initial symptoms may include excessive sleepiness, double vision, slurring of speech and poor motor functions. This may proceed to respiratory failure, fall in BP and heart rate, coma, cardiac arrest and even death. In case of a suspected overdose, rush the patient to an emergency care centre for further evaluation and treatment.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a dose of Epcon tablet, take it just when you remember. If the duration missed is lengthy, and it's almost time for the next one, it's recommended to skip the missed dose and return to the regular schedule. Don't double the dose of the tablet.

Mode of Action

How Does It Work?

Clonazepam is a benzodiazepine that acts on the brain pathways to increase the action of a chemical messenger called GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) increases its activity. This results in sedation, calming effects, and muscle relaxation. Clonazepam also increases the levels of another neurotransmitter called serotonin in the brain by increasing its synthesis. These effects are beneficial in the treatment of seizure disorders and anxiety.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • The concomitant use of this medication with opioids (like morphine, tramadol etc.) is contraindicated, as it may cause respiratory depression, coma and death.
  • It should also not be used with other CNS depressants like alcohol can also cause similar effects and present life-threatening adverse effects. Inform your doctor about your current medications at the time of prescription of Epcon.

  • Epcon tablet does not have any known interaction with food items.
