Medical Description
Drydex syrup is a medication used to treat dry cough and throat irritation. It contains a combination of bromhexine, dextromethorphan, and ammonium chloride, which work together to suppress coughing, loosen mucus, and facilitate easier clearance of the airways. This syrup is not recommended for children under 6 years of age and should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
Always shake the bottle well before use and measure each dose accurately using a cup, spoon, or dropper. Do not stop the medicine on your own or take more than the recommended amount. If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, inform your doctor before starting this medicine.
Some people may experience dizziness, sleepiness, or an upset stomach after taking Drydex syrup. Avoid alcohol and exercise caution when driving or operating machinery. Also, be sure to inform your doctor about all the medications or supplements you're taking, especially those that affect your brain function, to avoid potential harmful interactions.
Store the medication in a cool, dry place away from light and out of reach of children. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. In case of an overdose, symptoms like vomiting, rash, or drowsiness may occur; seek medical help right away.
According to the advisory issued by the Union Health Ministry, cough and cold medications should not be prescribed or dispensed to children under two years of age. These medications are generally not recommended for children under five years old. For children above that age, any use should be based on careful clinical evaluation and close supervision.

Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
- Drydex syrup contains ammonium chloride, bromhexine, and dextromethorphan.
- Ammonium chloride is an expectorant that produces mild irritation of the mucous lining of the stomach, which increases the water content in the respiratory tract, thereby relieving dryness and soreness of the respiratory passages.
- Bromhexine is a mucolytic agent that helps relieve cough by thinning and loosening mucus in the airways, making it easier to cough out.
- Dextromethorphan acts on the cough centre of the brain, which is responsible for the cough.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Some medicines can affect the way the Drydex syrup works, or this medicine itself, which can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
- Always inform your doctor about any other medications, herbs, or supplements you are currently taking or may take to avoid any potential interactions.
- Drydex syrup should not be used along with medicines used to treat brain mood disorders (monoamine oxidase inhibitors).
