Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Disulfiram 250 mg does not cause addiction. It is used to treat alcohol addiction by inducing unpleasant effects after taking alcohol while being treated with disulfiram.

Disulfiram decreases the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase which metabolises alcohol. Since alcohol is not metabolised completely, certain intermediate products are formed. These products are responsible for the emergence of symptoms that decrease craving for alcohol. However, counselling sessions should also be conducted to treat alcoholism along with prescribing medicines.

Disulfiram starts acting within a few minutes and its effect lasts for 1-2 weeks after taking the last dose.
