Quick Tips

  • Used for preventing pregnancy and for managing certain womb conditions.
  • It may cause changes in your periods, including spotting, lighter bleeding, or no bleeding.
  • Getting enough calcium and vitamin D helps support your bone health during treatment.
  • This medicine does not protect against infections passed on during sex, so use a barrier method as well.

Dosage

Overdose

As this injection is given by a healthcare professional, an overdose is unlikely. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you are late for your scheduled injection, use another form of contraception in the meantime and contact your clinic. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Medroxyprogesterone acts like the natural hormone progesterone. It stops the ovaries from releasing an egg, so pregnancy cannot happen. It also thickens the fluid at the neck of the womb, making it harder for sperm to get through, and thins the lining of the womb. For conditions such as endometriosis and heavy periods, it slows the growth of the womb lining, which helps reduce pain and bleeding.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Depo Provera injection works, and it can affect how other medicines work. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins, and herbal products you use. In particular, let your doctor know if you are taking medicines for seizures, certain medicines for infections, or certain herbal products, as these can change how well this medicine works.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

It can take several months, and sometimes up to a year or more, for the monthly cycle and fertility to return after the last injection. Talk to your doctor if you are planning a pregnancy.
Yes. Many people notice irregular spotting, lighter periods, or no periods at all. Tell your doctor if you have heavy or long-lasting bleeding.
No. It only prevents pregnancy and helps with certain womb conditions. Keep using barrier protection such as condoms to guard against infections.
Long-term use can lower bone strength, and this may not fully reverse after you stop. Getting enough calcium and vitamin D and doing weight-bearing exercise can help support your bones.
