Medical Description

Coldrid oral liquid is a combination medicine used to relieve common cold symptoms such as a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, watery eyes, fever and mild aches. It contains chlorpheniramine, paracetamol and phenylephrine. Chlorpheniramine reduces allergy-type nasal symptoms, paracetamol relieves pain and fever, and phenylephrine reduces swelling in the nasal passages to ease stuffiness. Coldrid oral liquid is measured and given by mouth as prescribed, including when it is prescribed for a child. It provides symptom relief and does not remove the viral cause of most colds.

Uses

  • Common cold: Eases discomfort from several cold symptoms, helping the person breathe more comfortably and manage fever and mild aches during recovery.
  • Allergy-related nasal symptoms: Allergy-triggered sneezing, watery eyes and nasal discharge can interfere with comfort; this medicine helps calm these symptoms and improve breathing comfort.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Coldrid oral liquid. Ask a doctor before using it if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, an overactive thyroid, glaucoma, breathing problems or liver disease. Do not combine it with another product containing paracetamol, another antihistamine, a decongestant, or a cold and flu medicine unless a doctor advises this.

Side effects

  • Sleepiness: Chlorpheniramine can make a child or adult drowsy and less alert. Avoid driving or climbing activities, and get urgent help if breathing becomes slow.
  • Dry mouth: Chlorpheniramine can reduce saliva and leave the mouth sticky. Offer suitable fluids, and seek advice if swallowing becomes difficult.
  • Nausea: The combination may upset the stomach and cause queasiness. Ask a doctor for help if repeated vomiting prevents fluids or medicine staying down.
  • Dizziness: Phenylephrine or chlorpheniramine may cause light-headedness. Sit down if it starts and seek care for fainting or severe palpitations.
  • Allergic reaction: An itchy rash may be an early sign of allergy. Stop the medicine and get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Ask your doctor before using Coldrid oral liquid during pregnancy, while planning pregnancy or while trying to conceive. Use it only if the doctor considers it suitable.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor before using Coldrid oral liquid while breastfeeding. Chlorpheniramine may make a breastfed baby sleepy, and phenylephrine may reduce milk supply.

Driving

Driving

Coldrid oral liquid may cause sleepiness, dizziness or blurred vision. Do not drive or operate machinery if you are affected.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol because it can increase sleepiness and dizziness and may add to the harmful effects of paracetamol.

Directions for Use

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack and do not drink directly from the bottle. Give or use Coldrid oral liquid exactly as prescribed. Do not combine it with other cold remedies or products containing paracetamol unless the prescriber advises it.

Storage and disposal

Store Coldrid oral liquid in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use it after the expiry date and ask a pharmacist how to dispose of leftover liquid.

Quick Tips

  • Use the measuring device supplied with the pack for every use.
  • Give suitable fluids and allow enough rest while cold symptoms settle.
  • Check other cold remedies for paracetamol, antihistamines or decongestants before combining them.
  • Avoid alcohol and activities requiring alertness if sleepiness or dizziness occurs.
  • Warm fluids or a warm saltwater gargle may soothe throat discomfort when suitable.
  • Keep Coldrid oral liquid away from children and do not share it.

Dosage

Overdose

Taking too much Coldrid oral liquid can cause severe sleepiness, agitation, vomiting, fast heartbeat, or delayed serious effects from paracetamol. Even if the person feels well, get urgent help. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Chlorpheniramine blocks the effects of histamine, a chemical involved in sneezing, watery eyes and a runny nose. Paracetamol reduces chemical signals involved in pain and fever. Phenylephrine narrows small blood vessels in the nose, reducing swelling and stuffiness.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Coldrid oral liquid works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention other paracetamol-containing products, antihistamines, decongestants, cough and cold medicines, medicines that cause sleepiness, sleeping medicines, antidepressants including monoamine oxidase inhibitors, and medicines for high blood pressure or heart disease. Combining these may increase paracetamol exposure, drowsiness, or blood pressure and heart effects.

Interactions with food items

Avoid alcohol because it can worsen sleepiness and may increase the risk of paracetamol-related harm. If caffeine makes you restless or causes palpitations, limit caffeinated drinks.
