Cofdex syrup works by suppressing the cough centre in the brain. It also helps to loosen the phlegm and mucous from the respiratory pathway and facilitates its removal.
This medicine is contraindicated in children below 6 years of age. Avoid driving and handling any machinery because this medicine can make you feel dizzy and drowsy. Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
- Cofdex syrup is a combination of three active ingredients - bromhexine, dextromethorphan, and ammonium chloride.
- Bromhexine is a mucolytic agent which relieves cough by thinning and loosening the phlegm from the airways and facilitating its removal.
- Dextromethorphan is an antitussive medicine that suppresses the cough center of the brain responsible for the cough.
- Ammonium chloride with its irritative action acts on the cells which leads to the production of fluid in the airways that helps in the removal of the phlegm or the cough.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Some medicines can affect the way the Cofdex syrup works, or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
- Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements, or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
- Antibiotics used to treat cough and other airway secretions should be used with caution with Cofdex syrup.
- Cofdex syrup should not be used along with medicines used to treat brain-mood disorders (monoamine oxidase inhibitors).
- Concomitant use of potent liver enzyme inhibitors like fluoxetine, paroxetine, quinidine, and terbinafine along with Cofdex syrup may increase the risk of side effects.
- When used along with anti allergic medicines (antihistamines) and other medicines used to treat brain and nervous system-related disorders, this syrup may increase the feeling of sleepiness, drowsiness, and dizziness.
