Medical Description

Clivazole vaginal capsule is used for abnormal vaginal discharge when infection is suspected, especially with odour, colour change, increased amount, itching, irritation or burning. It contains a combination of clindamycin, clotrimazole, tinidazole and lactobacillus. Clindamycin acts against susceptible bacteria, clotrimazole limits fungal growth, tinidazole acts against certain other infection-causing organisms, and lactobacillus is included as a helpful bacterial component of the formulation. This capsule is inserted into the vagina as directed, is for vaginal use only and is not swallowed.

Uses

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge: Unusual smell, colour, amount or irritation can indicate a vaginal infection; Clivazole helps address susceptible bacterial, fungal and other causes.
  • Mixed vaginal infection: Different organisms can cause discharge, itching or burning together; this combination targets several possible causes to help restore vaginal comfort.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use it if you previously had a serious reaction to clindamycin, lincomycin, clotrimazole or tinidazole. Tell your doctor if you have had severe diarrhoea after antibiotic treatment, bowel inflammation or liver disease, or if the discharge has not been medically assessed.

Side effects

  • Vaginal irritation: Temporary burning, stinging or soreness may follow insertion because local tissues can react to the capsule. Rinse accidental eye exposure with water and seek help if severe.
  • Diarrhoea: Clindamycin can disturb the bowel even when used vaginally. Seek prompt medical care for frequent watery stools, blood in stools or strong abdominal cramps.
  • Nausea: Tinidazole may cause queasiness or an unpleasant taste as it is absorbed. Contact a doctor if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down.
  • Abdominal discomfort: Antibiotic treatment can cause cramps or stomach discomfort. Arrange medical review for persistent pain or diarrhoea rather than self-treating it.
  • Skin rash: An allergy may appear as itching, rash or hives. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Overdose

If you think you have used too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Clindamycin blocks bacteria from making proteins needed for growth. Clotrimazole damages the protective covering of fungi, limiting their growth. Tinidazole acts against certain bacteria and other organisms by damaging their genetic material. Lactobacillus is included as a probiotic component that provides helpful bacteria in the formulation.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Clivazole vaginal capsule works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention warfarin or other blood thinners, medicines affecting the liver, other clindamycin or lincomycin products, tinidazole-containing medicines and other vaginal treatments, because combined treatment may increase side effects or require review.

Interactions with food items

Avoid alcohol during treatment and for the period advised by your doctor afterward because tinidazole may cause nausea, flushing, headache or vomiting when combined with alcohol.
