Medical Description
Axiotem capsule is a prescription chemotherapy medicine prescribed by doctors to treat adults with brain tumors such as glioblastoma multiforme or anaplastic astrocytoma. It contains temozolomide, which belongs to a group of medicines called alkylating agents. In the body, it is converted into an active substance that attaches to the genetic material, or DNA, of rapidly dividing brain tumor cells. This damages DNA and causes breaks, stopping tumor cells from dividing properly and causing them to die. This can help slow cancer progression or shrink it.
Axiotem capsule should be swallowed whole with water, at the same time each day. Your doctor will decide the exact dose and duration of your Axiotem capsule treatment. Because it can affect your blood cell counts and liver, your healthcare team will regularly monitor your blood tests and liver enzymes before and during treatment. If capsule of Axiotem capsule are accidentally opened or damaged, do not inhale or come into contact with the contents. If you come into contact with it, wash the affected area with water immediately.
Common side effects during treatment with Axiotem capsule include fatigue, convulsions, headache, reduction in platelet count, alopecia, nausea, vomiting, anorexia and constipation. Serious side effects include myelodysplastic syndrome and secondary malignancies, including myeloid leukemia, severe or long-lasting low blood cell counts, severe liver damage, pneumocystis pneumonia (a serious fungal lung infection), and opportunistic bacterial and viral infections.
Axiotem capsule should not be used during pregnancy, as it can harm the unborn baby. Women should use effective contraception during treatment and for 6 months after the last dose; men with partners who are or could become pregnant should use condoms during treatment and for 3 months after the last dose, and should not donate semen during this time. Avoid breastfeeding during treatment and for 1 week after the last dose. Treatment with Axiotem capsule may affect male fertility. Before starting treatment with Axiotem capsule, tell your doctor about all medicines, supplements, and herbal products you take, and if you have kidney or liver problems. Contact your healthcare team in case of a missed dose or overdose, and if you notice symptoms such as fever, chills, unusual bleeding or bruising, signs of infection, shortness of breath, cough, or breathing changes.
