Medical Description

Armyce suspension is an oral antibiotic reserved for selected serious bacterial infections, including typhoid fever, bacterial meningitis, bloodstream infections and certain rickettsial, ear, head and neck, or eye infections. It contains chloramphenicol, which prevents bacteria from making proteins needed for growth. This allows the body's immune system to clear susceptible bacteria when other suitable antibiotics may not work or cannot be used. Armyce suspension is taken by mouth under close medical supervision, with extra caution in people with blood, liver or kidney problems and in infants.

Uses

  • Typhoid fever: Chloramphenicol may treat typhoid caused by susceptible bacteria when an appropriate alternative is not suitable.
  • Bacterial meningitis: It may be used for serious bacterial infection around the brain when selected by a specialist.
  • Bloodstream infection: Severe bacterial infection in the blood may require chloramphenicol when other options are unsuitable.
  • Rickettsial infection: Certain infections such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever may respond when prescribed by a doctor.
  • Selected ear, head and neck infections: Some serious bacterial infections in these areas may be treated under specialist supervision.
  • Certain eye infections: Chloramphenicol may be prescribed for selected bacterial eye infections after medical assessment.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not take it. Do not use Armyce suspension for minor infections or infection prevention, or after a previous serious blood disorder caused by chloramphenicol. Tell your doctor about liver or kidney disease, blood disorders, pregnancy, or an infant who may receive this medicine.

Side effects

  • Nausea: Chloramphenicol can upset the digestive system and cause queasiness; seek advice if vomiting prevents drinking enough fluid.
  • Vomiting: Stomach irritation may cause vomiting during treatment; seek urgent advice if it is repeated or contains blood.
  • Diarrhoea: Changes in bowel bacteria can loosen stools; report severe, persistent or bloody diarrhoea urgently.
  • Glossitis: The tongue may become sore, swollen or unusually smooth; tell your doctor if eating or swallowing becomes difficult.
  • Headache: Head pain may occur during treatment; report severe headache with confusion, visual changes or marked weakness.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Avoid Armyce suspension during pregnancy unless a specialist decides that no suitable alternative is available. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Chloramphenicol may require a different treatment or close monitoring of the baby.

Driving

Driving

Do not drive if headache, confusion, dizziness or visual changes affect your concentration.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific interaction is known, but ask your doctor before drinking alcohol while being treated for a serious infection.

Shake well before use. Use the measuring device supplied with the pack. Do not drink from the bottle. Take Armyce suspension by mouth exactly as prescribed and do not change or stop it without speaking to your doctor.

Storage and disposal

Store Armyce suspension as directed on the pack, away from heat and children's reach. Shake before each use and discard it according to the pack instructions after the allowed storage period.

Quick Tips

  • Use Armyce suspension only for a serious infection diagnosed by a doctor.
  • Keep all blood-test appointments during treatment if your doctor recommends them.
  • Report unusual bruising, pale skin, fever, sore throat or marked weakness immediately.
  • Measure each dose with the supplied device and shake the suspension well.
  • Do not share or save leftover antibiotic suspension.

Dosage

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Chloramphenicol attaches to bacterial protein-making machinery and prevents bacteria from building essential proteins. This mainly stops bacterial growth and gives the immune system time to clear the infection. At higher amounts in the body, it can also kill some susceptible bacteria.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Armyce suspension works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, penicillin antibiotics and aminoglycoside antibiotics such as gentamicin may have reduced antibacterial effect when used with chloramphenicol. Iron-containing preparations may lower its absorption. Blood thinners, seizure medicines and some diabetes medicines can have stronger effects because chloramphenicol can slow their breakdown.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. Tell your doctor about iron supplements or fortified products because iron-containing preparations may reduce absorption.
