Medical Description

Antidep Tablet is a prescription medicine used in the treatment of all kinds of depression and childhood enuresis. It consists of Imipramine as its active ingredient. It is an antidepressant medication. It works by increasing a specific chemical messenger in the brain called serotonin. It is responsible for balancing mood swings and providing a calming effect. Managing depression due to illness, severe potentially suicidal depression, neurotic and reactive depression are some of the uses of Antidep tablet. Depression is a type of a mood disorder, which causes sad feelings, irritability, loss of interest in anything, etc. It can also be associated with many types of mood disorder or many kinds of phobic states like fear of flying, heights, agoraphobia (fear of open places and crowds), etc. Antidep Tablet helps stabilise the chemical substances and lower the symptoms of these conditions. Do not use this Antidep Tablet without the advice of a doctor. Direction for use of Antidep tablet should be followed correctly. Do not stop this medicine suddenly, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms like sweating, shaking, irritation, etc. Antidep usage should be monitored as it can cause suicidal thoughts. Take it at a fixed time each day to maintain stable levels in the body.

  • As per CDSCO, Antidep tablet is used in the treatment of depression (all kinds of depression)
  • It can also be used in managing childhood enuresis in children 6 years and older (reduces frequency and urgency of urination).

Contraindications

  • If you are allergic to Imipramine, avoid taking Antidep Tablet
  • If you are using other antidepressant medications
  • If you are noticing sudden mood changes, suicidal thoughts and behaviour
  • If you recently had a heart attack
  • If you have been diagnosed with other mental or psychological disorders like mania, bipolar disorder, etc
  • If you have or have ever had a seizure disorder and are currently under treatment for it
  • If you have a history of brain damage or a head injury
  • If you have problems with your urinary system or prostate (a male reproductive organ)
  • If you have angle-closure glaucoma (an eye condition with increased fluid pressure inside the eye)
  • If you have liver or kidney problems
  • If you have any suicidal thoughts

Directions for Use

  • Take the tablet in the exact dosage and at the same time every day as prescribed by the doctor
  • Do not exceed the dosage of Antidep Tablet, even if you cannot notice its effects
  • Take this tablet as a whole with a glass of water, without breaking, chewing or crushing it
  • Do not use Antidep Tablet with other medications without informing your doctor
  • Do not discontinue this medication abruptly, as it can have unwanted symptoms due to its withdrawal effects

Storage and disposal

Store Antidep Tablets in dry conditions and at room temperatures. Keep this medicine away from wet surfaces, direct sunlight, and humid conditions. Keep Antidep Tablet away from children and pets. Disposal: Dispose of the packaging of this tablet carefully after use. Throw them away if the packaging is already opened. Check the expiration date before taking the Antidep Tablet. Do not use this tablet if it's past the expiration date.

Overdose of Antidep Tablets can cause symptoms like extreme drowsiness, nausea, irregular or fast heartbeat, dizziness, fainting, seizures, decreased urination, unusual movements, slow breathing, and loss of consciousness. If you experience these symptoms, consult your doctor and seek emergency medical treatment. Medical tests can be performed from time to time to check the progress and monitor adverse effects of Antidep medicine.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed a single dose of the Antidep Tablet, take it as soon as you recall. If you remember missing a dose of this medicine when it's almost the time to take the next Antidep tablet, skip the missed dose and take the next one. Do not take both of them together, as it can lead to an overdose. Try to talk to your doctor if you have any confusion about the dosage or you missed multiple doses simultaneously.

How Does It Work?

Antidep Tablet has Imipramine as its active substance. It is believed that it works by stopping the reuptake of chemical messengers like norepinephrine and serotonin, neurotransmitters present at the end of the nerve cells in the brain. By preventing their reuptake, the effects of these messengers last longer. Thus, helping in regulating the mood swings and managing depression.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Do not use Antidep Tablet if you are already using other antidepressants like MAO inhibitors such as linezolid, methylene blue, phenelzine, selegiline, etc., as they can lead to severe side effects like tremors, severe seizures, etc. It can sometimes even lead to death. Atleast 14 day gap should be between taking these two medications.
  • Do not take other antidepressants with a similar composition like sertraline, fluoxetine, paroxetine, etc. They can exaggerate the side effects of Antidep medicine.
  • Do not use Antidep tablet with other medicines that cause sedation and drowsiness, like tranquillisers, ipod or narcotic pain relievers, muscle relaxants, etc., without consulting a doctor.
  • Some of the other medications that can react with Antidep Tablet and cause an adverse reaction are:
  • Blood thinners such as warfarin
  • Heart medication like digoxin
  • anticholinergic medicines (including antiparkinsonism agents like levodopa)
  • Anti-seizure medications like phenytoin, phenobarbital
  • HIgh blood pressure medicines

Interactions with food items

  • Avoid drinking grapefruit juice and cranberry juice, or eating those fruits, while you are taking Antidep Tablets, as they can increase the levels of this medicine in your blood. It can lead to unwanted adverse effects.
