Medical Description

Ambulax Hd tablet is a prescription medication used to treat anxiety disorders. It can also be used for panic disorder and anxiety related to depression. Anxiety disorder is a mental health condition characterised by episodes of fear, worry, nervousness, sweating and rapid heartbeat. In contrast, panic attacks are due to overstimulation of the nerve cells in the brain. Ambulax Hd tablet contains two active ingredients: alprazolam and propranolol. Alprazolam slows down excessive brain activity and produces a feeling of relaxation, calmness and induces sleep. Propranolol helps manage cardiac symptoms of anxiety. Ambulax Hd tablet should be taken in the prescribed dosage and duration as advised by your doctor. This medication should not be stopped suddenly without consulting your doctor, as it can cause clinical worsening of your condition or may lead to withdrawal-like symptoms. The doctor’s advice must be followed strictly as this medication possesses habit-forming potential.

Directions for Use

  • Swallow the whole tablet orally with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew this medicine.

How Does It Work?

Ambulax Hd tablet contains two active ingredients: alprazolam and propranolol. Alprazolam is benzodiazepine class of medicine. It works by binding GABA receptors in the brain, which increases GABA activity, a natural chemical messenger in the brain. Increased effects of GABA causes suppression of the excessive and abnormal electrical activity of the nerve cells in the brain, produces a feeling of relaxation and calmness, and relieves anxiety symptoms. Propranolol is a beta-blocker. It blocks the receptors of epinephrine or norepinephrine (chemical messengers). These messengers help reduce blood pressure, heart rate and excess stress on the heart.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Tell your doctor about all your prescription and non-prescription medications, herbal products, vitamins and nutritional supplements you are consuming or plan to take. There is a chance of substance interaction. Many medicines can interact with Ambulax Hd tablets, making them less effective or increasing the side effects.
  • Ambulax Hd tablet interaction with antidepressants or mood-elevating medicines like fluoxetine and desipramine can cause increased side effects.
  • Ambulax Hd tablet interaction with antihistamines (allergy medicines), Pain killers, such as morphine, oxycodone, fentanyl, hydrocodone, tramadol, codeine, sleeping pills, etc., can increase drowsiness and fatigue.
  • Ambulax Hd tablet interaction with antifungal medications like fluconazole, itraconazole, and ketoconazole can reduce its effects.
  • Ambulax Hd tablets can reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives or birth control pills. So, it is advised to use other contraceptive methods like condoms.
  • Ambulax Hd tablet may also interact with herbal supplements like St. John’s wort and can lead to severe side effects.

Interactions with food items

  • You can continue with the regular diet as food does not influence the effect of the Ambulax Hd tablet. However, it would help if you avoided caffeine-containing diets, grapefruit and its juice, as it may reduce the effectiveness of the Ambulax Hd tablet.
