Medical Description
Ambril Sg syrup is used to help alleviate coughs that produce mucus, especially those associated with asthma, bronchitis, or smoking. It works by thinning the mucus in your lungs, allowing you to cough it out more easily, and helps open up your airways to make breathing smoother.
This medicine contains ingredients like ambroxol, guaifenesin, salbutamol, and menthol. Ambroxol thins mucus and soothes your throat, guaifenesin loosens mucus to clear your chest, salbutamol relaxes tight airway muscles for easier breathing, and menthol provides a cooling, soothing effect.
You should not take Ambril Sg syrup if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, have heart problems, thyroid issues, acute porphyria, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Always tell your doctor about any other medicines you take, especially blood pressure drugs, antidepressants, or anaesthesia medicines, as there can be interactions.
Store this medicine in a cool, dry place, out of the reach of children. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but do not take a double dose. In case of an overdose, seek medical help immediately. Avoid using this medicine during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless your doctor says it is safe.
If your cough lasts a long time, produces lots of mucus, or is linked to smoking or lung diseases, check with your doctor. Persistent coughs can signal serious health issues that need proper treatment.
According to the advisory issued by the Union Health Ministry, cough and cold medications should not be prescribed or dispensed to children under two years of age. These medications are generally not recommended for children under five years old. For children above that age, any use should be based on careful clinical evaluation and close supervision.

Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
- Ambroxol is a safe cough medicine that helps your lungs by thinning sticky mucus, allowing you to cough it out more easily. It also boosts the lungs’ natural slippery lining (surfactant) to prevent mucus from sticking. It even numbs your throat a bit to ease soreness.
- Guaifenesin is an expectorant, which means it helps your body clear mucus by making it thinner and less sticky. It does this by drawing extra fluid into your airways and loosening thick mucus, allowing it to be moved easily by the tiny hairs (cilia) in your lungs. Once the mucus is thinned, your cough becomes more effective, helping to clear your chest and make breathing easier.
- Salbutamol (also known as albuterol) is a fast-acting bronchodilator that helps you breathe more easily. It does this by relaxing the tight muscles around your airways, which opens them up within minutes. Think of it as a quick "airway opener" that relieves wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath when you need it most.
- Menthol is a cooling and soothing agent used in cough drops, throat sprays, and chest rubs. When inhaled or applied, menthol fools your cold-sensing nerves (called TRPM8 receptors) into perceiving a refreshing coolness without actually lowering your temperature.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Be cautious if you are undergoing anaesthesia, especially with medicines like chloroform, cyclopropane, or halothane.
- The way this product works might be affected if you are taking guanethidine, reserpine, methyldopa, or certain antidepressants such as tricyclics.
- It is generally not recommended to take this product with oral salbutamol or specific blood pressure medications, such as beta-blockers like propranolol.
- If you are using MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors), you can still take this product. Avoid combining this product with cough suppressants, such as codeine, as it may cause excessive mucus buildup in your lungs, making it harder to breathe. You may take this product alongside antibiotics such as amoxicillin, cefuroxime, erythromycin, and doxycycline, and it may even enhance the effectiveness of these antibiotics in your lungs.
