Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
This medicine is a unique type of antidepressant. It has a rapid onset of action. It is a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant (NaSSA) which means it acts by blocking adrenergic and serotonin receptors. By blocking these receptors, Mirtazapine increases the concentration of norepinephrine and serotonin. Both are neurotransmitters (chemical messengers) that regulate mood by working in various regions of the brain. Mirtazapine improves brain activity which results in feelings of well-being. The liver is responsible for metabolising it.
