Molecule Description

Dexlansoprazole is a drug that reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It is used to treat stomach and intestine acid-related diseases such as heartburn, acid reflux, peptic ulcer disease, and other stomach conditions caused by excessive acid production. Dexlansoprazole is also used to prevent stomach ulcers and acidity caused by long-term painkiller use. It belongs to the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class of medications. Take this medication one hour before a meal, preferably in the morning, to get the most out of it. The dosage will be determined by your underlying condition as well as your response to the medication. Even if your symptoms go away quickly, keep taking it as directed. Nausea, vomiting, flatulence, and diarrhoea are the most common side effects of this medication. These symptoms are usually mild, but if they continue to bother you, see your doctor. The use of this medication for an extended period of time may increase the risk of side effects. Using this medication for more than a year, for example, may increase your risk of bone fractures, especially if taken at higher doses. Discuss with your doctor how to prevent bone loss (osteoporosis), such as taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. Inform your doctor if you have severe liver problems, are taking HIV medications, have had an allergic reaction to similar medications in the past, or have osteoporosis before taking this medication. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should also consult their doctor before taking it.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Concomitant use of Anti-viral drugs like Rilpivirine or Atazanavir or other anti-HIV medications along with dexlansoprazole should be avoided as dexlansoprazole may affect the antiviral drugs.
  • Do not use Dexlansoprazole if you are on blood-thinning medication like warfarin or phenprocoumon as both the medicines together may lead to increased bleeding that might prove fatal.
  • Dexlansoprazole when used along with methotrexate for the long term have shown to have a toxic effect.
  • Dexlansoprazole reduces the absorption of medicines like iron salts, erlotinib, dasatinib, nilotinib, mycophenolate mofetil, ketoconazole/itraconazole which are dependent on gastric acidity for their mechanism.
  • Inform your doctor if you are on St.John's Wort (a flowering plant used to treat mood and nervous system related disorders) as it may decrease the efficiency of dexlansoprazole.
  • Close monitoring is advised in patients who are on water pills (class of drug prescribed to remove excess salt and water from the body) like Bumetanide (Bumex), Furosemide (Lasix), along with Dexlansoprazole as diuretics tend to cause magnesium imbalance and dexlansoprazole worsens the condition.
