Cilnidipine
Molecule Description
Cilnidipine inhibits contraction of blood vessels and also those on the heart, thereby reducing the load on the heart and decreases blood pressure.
Uses of Cilnidipine
Cilnidipine is used to treat high blood pressure and heart disease. It is also used to relieve the heart strain in a heart attack.
Contraindications of Cilnidipine
When should one not use Cilnidipine
- Allergic reaction to Cilnidipine
- Recent heart attack
- Low blood pressure due to causes related to heart (cardiogenic shock)
Side effects of Cilnidipine
Common side effects of this drug are:
- Swelling of feet
- Tiredness
- Headache
- Depression
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Stomach pain
- Palpitations, flushing and excessive fall in blood pressure are observed as serious side effects along with male sexual dysfunction and allergic reactions
- In a few cases, one can also see abnormal liver function

Pregnancy

Can I take Cilnidipine during pregnancy?
A:
Cilnidipine is not rendered ‘safe’ for use during pregnancy. Hence, it should not usually be used during pregnancy because other relatively safer alternatives to control blood pressure are available.
Breast Feeding
Q:
Can I take Cilnidipine while breastfeeding?
A:
The extent of excretion of the medicine in mother’s milk is not exactly known. Hence, it is preferable to avoid Cilnidipine during lactation.
Driving
Q:
Can I drive if I have consumed Cilnidipine?
A:
It is advised to avoid driving during the medication of Cilnidipine as it causes sleepiness and drowsiness while driving.
Alcohol
Q:
Can I consume alcohol with Cilnidipine?
A:
Consumption of alcohol with Cilnidipine may cause a decrease in blood pressure so avoid alcohol while using this medicine.

Interactions of Cilnidipine
Interactions with other medicines
- Antiepileptic like Carbamazepine
- Drugs for treating psychiatric conditions (antipsychotic) combined with Cilnidipin may cause low blood pressure
- Cilnidipine with medicines for diabetes may result in changes in sugar levels
Interactions with food items
No specific interactions. Grapefruit and its juice should not be consumed by people who are taking Cilnidipine as it may affect the action of the drug.
Dietary Restrictions of Cilnidipine
If your doctor prescribes a low-salt or low-sodium diet, follow these directions rigorously.
Dosage of Cilnidipine
Overdose
You must immediately report to an emergency medical care unit as there are chances of excessive lowering of blood pressure with an overdose. This could be dangerous.
Missed a Dose
If you missed any dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosage schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for a missed one.
