Medical Description

Ticantrol powder for infusion is an antibiotic combination used for serious bacterial infections affecting areas such as the lungs, urinary tract, skin, teeth, joints and bones. It contains ticarcillin and clavulanic acid. Ticarcillin stops bacteria from building a protective covering, while clavulanic acid blocks bacterial enzymes that could break down ticarcillin. Ticantrol infusion is prepared and given into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, and it is not self-administered.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Ticantrol infusion may be used when the expected benefit outweighs possible risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Available information suggests that little medicine passes into breast milk and is not expected to harm the baby, but your doctor will assess whether treatment is suitable.

Driving

Driving

Dizziness, fits or an allergic reaction may make driving unsafe. Do not drive until you feel fully alert and your doctor considers it safe.

Alcohol

Alcohol

No specific harmful alcohol interaction is established, but avoid alcohol if you feel dizzy or unwell.

Directions for Use

This infusion will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. The healthcare professional will prepare the powder and give the infusion into a vein. Complete the prescribed course even if you begin to feel better.

Storage and disposal

The unopened powder should be stored by the hospital according to the manufacturer's instructions and protected from unsuitable heat or moisture. Do not keep or dispose of prepared infusion yourself.

Quick Tips

  • Tell the healthcare team about every previous antibiotic allergy before treatment.
  • Complete the prescribed course unless your doctor changes it.
  • Report severe diarrhoea, rash, breathing difficulty or unusual bruising promptly.
  • Drink fluids if permitted by your doctor, especially if you have diarrhoea or fever.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much may cause seizures, severe diarrhoea or kidney-related problems. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ticarcillin is a penicillin antibiotic that prevents bacteria from forming a protective covering, causing them to die. Clavulanic acid blocks enzymes that can break down ticarcillin. Together they help ticarcillin remain active against susceptible bacteria.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Ticantrol infusion works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention blood thinners, gout medicines such as probenecid, methotrexate, other antibiotics and medicines that affect the kidneys. Probenecid may increase antibiotic levels, blood thinners may increase bleeding risk, and kidney-affecting medicines may increase kidney problems.
