Medical Description

Taxocare injection is an anticancer medication used to treat certain types of breast cancer, prostate cancer, gastric cancer, and head and neck cancer. It may be administered alone or in combination with other anticancer medications. This injection contains docetaxel. Taxocare injection will be administered by a healthcare professional in a medical setting.

Taxocare injection can impact fertility in both men and women. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during and after treatment as advised by their doctor. Men should also use contraception and consider sperm preservation before treatment. Docetaxel can harm a developing fetus, so it should not be used during pregnancy unless specifically prescribed by a specialist after assessment of the risks. Breastfeeding should be discontinued during treatment due to potential risks to the infant.

Uses

  • Treatment of breast cancer (early and metastatic).
  • Treatment of small cell lung cancer.
  • Treatment of hormone refractory metastatic prostate cancer.
  • Treatment of advanced gastric (stomach) adenocarcinoma.
  • Treatment of locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.

Contraindications

  • You are allergic to docetaxel or any of its ingredients.
  • You have a low white blood cell count; if you are unsure, ask your doctor.
  • You have a history of liver disease.
  • Other contraindications may apply depending on the medicines used in combination with docetaxel.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding require special precautions and should be discussed with your doctor.

Side effects

Very common side effects (occurring frequently):
  • Low white blood cell count (neutropenia), significantly increasing the risk of severe infections
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia), causing fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), leading to easy bruising or bleeding
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and mouth sores (stomatitis)
  • Fatigue, asthenia (weakness), and fluid retention (edema)
Other reported side effects:
  • Changes in sense of taste (dysgeusia)
  • Nail changes (discoloration or loosening of nails)
  • Peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling, or pain in the hands and feet)
  • Muscle and joint pain (myalgia and arthralgia)
  • Skin reactions (rash or redness)
Serious but less common side effects:
  • Severe, life-threatening neutropenic fever and serious infections (such as sepsis or pneumonia)
  • Severe hypersensitivity reactions (including sudden rash, low blood pressure, or breathing difficulties)
  • Severe fluid retention (pleural effusion, pericardial effusion, or severe generalized swelling)
  • Acute respiratory distress or interstitial lung disease
  • Severe skin reactions (such as toxic epidermal necrolysis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome)

Precautions and Warnings

Other General Warnings

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You suffer from liver disease or have abnormal liver function tests.
  • You have a low neutrophil count.
  • You are already on other anti-cancer medications.
  • You experience abnormal swelling due to excess fluid accumulation in the body, pain, tingling, or burning in the hands and feet, skin rashes, etc., after taking the injection.
  • Tell your doctor if you have previously experienced a severe allergic reaction to docetaxel
Alcohol

Alcohol

There is no specific requirement to completely avoid alcohol with docetaxel. However, alcohol may worsen symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, or dizziness. Discuss alcohol consumption with your doctor, particularly if you have liver problems.

Driving

Driving

Use caution. Taxocare injection can cause fatigue, weakness, or dizziness that may impair your alertness. Avoid driving or operating machinery if you feel unwell following an infusion.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Avoid during pregnancy as it may cause fetal harm. Inform the doctor if you are pregnant or planning for pregnancy before initiating treatment with the medicine. If you become pregnant while taking the treatment, inform the doctor immediately.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Breastfeeding should be avoided during treatment with Taxocare injection because of the potential risk to the nursing infant.

Directions for Use

  • Taxocare injection is always prepared and administered by a trained healthcare professional as an intravenous infusion in a hospital or clinic.
  • Do not attempt to self-administer or prepare this medication at home.
  • Follow all pre-medication instructions (such as taking prescribed oral corticosteroids) your doctor gives before the infusion to reduce the risk of severe hypersensitivity reactions and fluid retention.
  • Keep all scheduled appointments for your treatment cycles and blood

Storage and disposal

  • Store Taxocare injection according to the storage conditions specified for the particular product.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Quick Tips

  • Take your prescribed oral corticosteroid pre-medications exactly as directed.
  • Keep all scheduled blood test appointments so your doctor can check your white blood cell counts before every treatment cycle.
  • Report any fever, chills, sore throat, or signs of infection to your medical team immediately, as neutropenic fever is a medical emergency.
  • Watch for signs of fluid retention, such as sudden weight gain, swelling in your ankles, or shortness of breath.
  • Inform all your healthcare providers that you are taking this medication before undergoing any other medical procedures or dental work.

Dosage

Overdose

If an overdose is suspected, emergency medical intervention must be initiated immediately in a hospital setting. Symptoms of an overdose can include profound bone marrow suppression, severe neutropenia, high fever, peripheral neuropathy, and severe gastrointestinal toxicity. Management includes supportive hospital care, including appropriate monitoring and treatment of complications.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a scheduled infusion appointment, contact your hospital or oncology clinic immediately to reschedule. Do not try to make up for a missed session on your own, as your doctor will safely adjust your treatment schedule based on your blood counts and recovery status.

How does this medicine work?

Taxocare injection works by interfering with microtubules, structures that are essential for cell division. It stabilises microtubules and prevents their normal breakdown, which interferes with cancer-cell division and eventually leads to cell death.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Other medicines can affect how Taxocare injection works, or Taxocare injection can affect how other medicines work when taken at the same time.
  • Inform the physician about the medicines, supplements, or herbal products you are taking or might take to avoid possible interactions. This is especially important if you are taking antibiotics, antifungals, anti-infectives, anti-HIV medicines, etc.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes, it may occur due to fluid retention. Fluid retention can cause swelling, especially in the feet. If you notice any swelling, consult your doctor immediately.
The duration depends on your cancer type and how your body responds to treatment. Continue treatment as your doctor advises.
Hair loss from Taxocare injection is usually temporary, although hair may take some time to grow back after treatment. In some patients, hair loss may persist. Consult your doctor for specific concerns.
