Medical Description

Sulbacin powder for injection is an antibiotic used for serious bacterial infections affecting the abdomen, skin, pelvis, lungs, bones or joints. It contains a combination of ampicillin and sulbactam. Ampicillin prevents susceptible bacteria from building their protective outer wall, while sulbactam blocks enzymes that can stop ampicillin from working. A doctor or nurse prepares and gives the injection in a hospital or clinic, and it must not be self-injected. It is used only when a clinician has selected it for a susceptible bacterial infection.

Uses

  • Intra-abdominal infections: Treats susceptible bacterial infections inside the abdomen, including infections affecting the abdominal lining.
  • Skin and tissue infections: Helps clear deeper bacterial infections causing swelling, redness and pain in skin or soft tissue.
  • Pelvic infections: Treats certain bacterial infections involving the female reproductive organs under specialist care.
  • Bone and joint infections: Helps treat susceptible infections in bones or joints when hospital treatment is required.
  • Bacterial pneumonia: May treat pneumonia caused by susceptible bacteria when prescribed by a clinician.

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not receive it. Do not receive it if you have had a serious allergic reaction to penicillin antibiotics or other related beta-lactam antibiotics.

Side effects

  • Injection-site reaction: Pain, redness, swelling or irritation may occur where the injection is given. Tell the healthcare professional if the area becomes increasingly painful.

  • Rash: A new rash may be an antibiotic allergy. Get emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.
  • Nausea or vomiting: Stomach upset can occur during treatment. Tell your doctor if vomiting prevents you from keeping fluids down.
  • Blood-test changes: Changes in blood cells or bilirubin may appear during treatment. Report marked paleness, unusual tiredness or yellowing to your doctor.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Use Sulbacin only when the expected benefit justifies possible risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. The clinician will assess possible exposure through milk and advise whether feeding should continue.

Driving

Driving

Avoid driving if dizziness or another symptom affects concentration or reaction speed.

Alcohol

Alcohol

The effect of alcohol with Sulbacin is not well established. Ask your doctor before drinking alcohol during treatment.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. The healthcare professional will prepare the solution, inspect it and choose the injection method. A cloudy or discoloured prepared solution should not be used. Tell the healthcare professional about antibiotic allergies, kidney disease, liver disease and all medicines you use.

Storage and disposal

Store the unopened powder as directed by the hospital or pharmacist, away from heat and moisture. The prepared solution must be handled and discarded by healthcare staff according to approved procedures. Keep it out of children's reach.

Quick Tips

  • Tell the clinician about penicillin allergy before the injection is prepared.
  • Report severe diarrhoea, a spreading rash or breathing difficulty immediately.
  • Do not self-inject or use a leftover vial.
  • Keep the injection site clean and tell staff about increasing pain or swelling.
  • Attend any blood or organ-function checks recommended by your doctor.

Dosage

Overdose

An excessive amount may increase the chance of allergic reactions, diarrhoea or other antibiotic effects. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Ampicillin prevents susceptible bacteria from building their protective cell wall, causing bacterial death. Sulbactam disables resistance enzymes produced by some bacteria, helping ampicillin work more effectively.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Sulbacin injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, warfarin and similar blood thinners may increase bleeding, probenecid can slow removal of the antibiotic and raise its levels, allopurinol may increase the risk of a severe rash, and methotrexate may have stronger effects. Other antibiotics, especially aminoglycosides, may be incompatible in the same infusion line. Live bacterial vaccines such as the Bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccine may work less well during antibiotic treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
