Sodabicarb injection is used to treat acid-base imbalance leading to lower than normal pH of the body.
Contraindications
- If you are allergic to sodium bicarbonate or any other component of Sodabicarb Injection.
- If you have a certain condition such as kidney failure, hypertension, oedema, heart failure where sodium intake is restricted.
- If you are on hypoventilation (increased carbon dioxide).
- If you had a kidney stone.
- If you have acid-base imbalance due to lung conditions.
- If you have electrolyte imbalance such as decreased potassium, calcium, chloride and increase sodium level.
Side effects
- Increased bicarbonate levels

- Increased fluid load (volume overload)

How Does It Work?
Sodium Bicarbonate increases the bicarbonate level in the blood, thereby neutralizing the excess of hydrogen ions, the cause of low blood pH.
Directions for Use

- Do not self inject, follow any aftercare instructions given by the doctor/nurse.
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Corticosteroids should be used cautiously when on Sodabicarb injection.
- Increased alkalisation by Sodabicarb injection can result in a decreased effect of certain medicines such as doxycycline, methenamine (antibiotic), acetylsalicylic acid (painkiller), chlorpropamide (anti-diabetic), lithium (anti-anxiety)....
- Increased alkalisation by Sodabicarb injection can result in an increased effect of certain medicines such as quinidine, flecainide (heart condition), amphetamines, ephedrine, pseudoephedrine (CNS stimulants), memantine (Alzheimer's disease) and mecamylamine (hypertension)....
- When Sodabicarb injection is used along with diuretics such as bumetanide, ethacrynic acid, frusemide and thiazides can cause a low level of chloride ions in the body.
- Concurrent use of potassium supplements with Sodabicarb injection may cause decreased potassium levels in the blood dues to internal transfer within the cells.
- Discuss with your doctor about any other medicine, herbal preparation and supplements you are taking currently to avoid any possible drug interactions.
Storage and disposal
- Store Sodabicarb injection at a temperature not exceeding 30 °C in the original package in order to protect it from light.
- Use immediately after dilution or first opening of the medicinal product. Do not freeze.
