Medical Description

Revocon Tablet is a prescribed medicine that contains tetrabenazine as an active ingredient. It is used for the treatment of Huntington's disease, an inherited condition in which nerve cells in the brain get affected and leads to involuntary movement, lack of concentration and understanding, mood swings, hallucination or other psychiatric symptoms. Before starting the treatment you should tell your doctor if you have ever had or had a family history of depression or any psychotic disorders. You must not stop this medicine suddenly as it may worsen the condition. Also, try to take the medicine same time every day for effective treatment.

Uses

Revocon Tablet is indicated for the treatment of uncontrolled movement disorder associated with nervous system conditions like Huntington's disease. It is characterized by symptoms like irregular or jerky movements, difficulty in concentration, social withdrawal, lack of sleep etc.

Contraindications

  • If you are allergic to this medicine or any of the ingredient of this medicine.
  • If you usually have thoughts of killing yourself or untreated/undertreated psychiatric disorder.
  • If you are suffering from tumors associated with adrenal or pituitary gland and breast cancer.
  • If you are breastfeeding.
  • If you are suffering from Parkinson's disease.
  • If you already taking medicines to control high blood pressure and psychiatric disorders like reserpine, selegiline, phenelzine etc.

Breast Feeding

It is not known if this medicine passes into the breastmilk. So it is not recommended for the use of breastfeeding mother. It is advised to stop nursing if treatment with Revocon Tablet is necessary.

Driving

Revocon Tablet may cause drowsiness. Therefore it is advised to avoid driving, operating heavy machinery or any activity that needs alertness.

Alcohol

Alcohol consumption along with this medicine can potentiate drowsiness or sedation. Therefore it may be best to hold off on drinking alcohol until you have finished treatment.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You are suffering from a liver problem.
  • You may feel depressed or it may worsen the condition if you already have any kind of brain disorder. Close monitoring of such patients is required if being treated with this medicine.
  • You have any kind of heart-related problem and already taking medicines for a heart condition.
  • You may start feeling some mental changes like confusion or hallucination, muscle stiffness or fever, such a condition is called Neuroleptic.
  • Malignant Syndrome. In such situations, the treatment should be discontinued immediately and start an alternative therapy.
  • You may experience unusual changes in behaviour or may have suicidal thoughts.
  • It must be informed to the patient's family members or caretakers about the risk of self-harm kind of thought. They must inform the treating physician if they find such signs in the patient.
  • Your physician may gradually increase your dose for several weeks to find the suitable dose for you in order to avoid the risk of side effects.

Directions for Use

  • Take this medicine as instructed by your doctor.
  • Do not change your dose unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Never stop the medicine on your own.
  • It can be taken with or without food.
  • It would be best if you took the doses at the appropriate time for the desired effect.

Storage and disposal

  • It does not require any special storage conditions.
  • Keep it out of the reach of children.
  • Do not take this medicine after the expiry date which is mentioned on the medicine.

Dosage

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, drop in blood pressure, sweating, drop in body temperature. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine and experience such symptoms, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How Does It Work?

Revocon Tablet contains tetrabenazine as an active ingredient. It acts as a monoamine depeletor. Whereas monoamines are certain natural substances present in the brain that are responsible for nervous and muscular function such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine. Therefore Revocon Tablet works by inhibiting the activity of monoamine and helps in involuntary movements (also called chorea) associated with Huntington's disease.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

  • Concomitant use of Revocon Tablet and medicine to treat psychotic disorders like reserpine, selegiline etc. should be avoided.
  • Concomitant use Revocon Tablet with a certain type of medicines to treat psychotic disorders, opioids (painkillers), medicines to control high blood pressure and sleeping pills should be avoided.
  • Other medicines like fluoxetine, paroxetine, terbinafine, moclobemide and quinidine should be used with caution if taken along with Revocon Tablet. The doctor may reduce the dose of Revocon Tablet.
  • Levodopa should be used with caution if taken along with this medicine.
  • Caution is advised if medicines to treat psychotic disorders (like chlorpromazine, thioridazine), antibiotics like gatifloxacin, moxifloxacin, and medicines used for heart conditions like quinidine, procainamide, amiodarone, sotalol, if used simultaneously with Revocon Tablet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Don’t stop taking medicine suddenly or don't miss the dose frequently, otherwise, involuntary movements may return or get worsen 12-18 hours after the last dose of Revocon Tablet.Consult a doctor if you have not taken medicine for more than 5 days. It is advised to restart the treatment after consultation only.

It can cause serious side effects like depression, suicidal thoughts, behavioural changes, lack of sleep, confusion, drop in blood pressure etc. There is an increased risk of depression, suicidal thoughts, behavioural changes. Close monitoring is required for such patients.

It affects the person's functional ability and leads to involuntary muscle movement, unusual thinking, psychiatric disorder. It is characterized by symptoms like involuntary jerky movements (also called chorea), involuntary eye movement, difficulty in speaking and swallowing, difficulty in concentration, social withdrawal, lack of sleep, frequent thoughts of suicide etc.

Inform the doctor about your detailed medical history and all other medicines including supplements or herbal products.Inform your doctor if you have heart disease.Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to have a baby.You should tell your doctor if you have ever had suicidal thoughts and a history of treated or undertreated depression.Your physician may gradually increase the dose over several weeks to find the suitable dose for you in order to minimize the possibility of side effects.

Concomitant use of Revocon Tablet along with the medicines containing reserpine or other medicines required for psychotic disorders like Isocarboxazid, phenelzine, selegiline (MAO inhibitors) should be avoided.If you are already taking these medicines, then they should be stopped at least 14 days prior to treatment with Revocon Tablet. Discuss with your doctor any other medicine you are taking currently to avoid any possible drug interactions.
