Medical Description

Nixim tablet is an antibiotic used for certain bacterial infections of the urinary tract, ears, throat, sinuses and lungs. It contains cefixime, a cephalosporin antibiotic that works against susceptible bacteria. Cefixime prevents these bacteria from building their protective cell wall, so they weaken and die. Nixim tablet is taken by mouth with or without food as prescribed, and it does not treat viral illnesses such as colds or flu.

Uses

  • Urinary tract infections: Helps clear susceptible bacterial infections affecting the bladder or kidneys and supports recovery from urinary symptoms.
  • Ear, nose and throat infections: Treats susceptible bacterial infections affecting the middle ear, throat, tonsils or sinuses.
  • Chest and lung infections: Helps manage bacterial infections such as pneumonia or bacterial bronchitis when prescribed by a doctor.
  • Certain sexually transmitted infections: May treat specific uncomplicated bacterial infections of the urethra or cervix when confirmed and prescribed.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Tell your doctor before use if you have previously reacted to cefixime, another cephalosporin, penicillin or a related antibiotic. Medical advice is needed if you have severe kidney disease or a history of serious bowel inflammation after antibiotic treatment.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: Cefixime can disturb normal bowel bacteria, causing loose stools during or after treatment. Seek medical advice promptly if stools are severe, persistent or bloody.
  • Nausea: Stomach upset may cause queasiness during treatment. Tell your doctor if nausea is severe or prevents you from keeping fluids down.
  • Stomach pain: Irritation of the digestive system can cause cramping or abdominal pain. Seek advice if pain is severe, persistent or accompanied by swelling.
  • Indigestion: Cefixime may cause burning, fullness or discomfort after eating. Tell your doctor if it does not settle or affects food and fluid intake.
  • Vomiting: Treatment-related stomach upset can cause vomiting. Contact your doctor if you cannot keep fluids down or signs of dehydration appear.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Cefixime blocks the formation of the bacterial cell wall, a protective outer covering bacteria need to survive and multiply. Without this covering, susceptible bacteria weaken and die, allowing the body's natural defenses to clear the infection. It does not work against viruses.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Nixim tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention blood thinners such as warfarin, other antibiotics and medicines that may affect kidney function.
