Metronidazole (Cip) 125mg suspension is a medicine containing metronidazole. It is used to treat infections caused by bacteria and parasites like acute dental infections, bacterial vaginosis, etc.

Pregnancy

There is inadequate evidence on the safety of metronidazole in pregnant women. Therefore, it should be avoided during pregnancy and only used when absolutely necessary. If you become pregnant during medication or plan to get pregnant, inform your doctor immediately.

Breast Feeding

The medicine is known to produce side effects such as dizziness, confusion, and seizures which may influence your driving ability. Hence if you observe these symptoms, avoid driving.

Alcohol

Alcohol should be stopped entirely while taking this medicine as it results in nausea, vomiting, rapid beating of the heart, and a flushed face. Alcohol should be avoided for at least 14 days after completing the treatment with metronidazole.

Directions for Use

  • Take the dose as prescribed by your physician
  • Shake the bottle well before use
  • Use the spoon or dispenser that comes with the bottle to administer the exact amount of dose as instructed by the treating doctor
  • Do not take more than the prescribed dose in a day

Storage and disposal

  • Store in a cool and dry place below 25°
  • Keep it out of the reach of children and pets
  • Keep it away from direct exposure to sunlight
  • The medication should be disposed of 24 months after the date of manufacture if it is not opened
  • Do not flush the contents of medication or throw it in household waste
  • Talk to your pharmacist about the safe ways of medicine disposal

Overdose

An overdose of Metronidazole suspension may cause vomiting and poor muscle coordination. Contact your doctor immediately or rush to the nearest hospital if you observe these symptoms.

Missed a Dose

If you miss a dose of the medicine, take it as soon as you remember. However, skip the previous dose and follow your regular dosage routine if the next dose is approaching. Do not take two doses at once to compensate for the loss of missed dose.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Disulphiram results in symptoms of psychosis when used with metronidazole
  • Metronidazole increases the effects of blood-thinning medications like warfarin
  • Medicines containing lithium may result in kidney disorders when taken along with methotrexate
  • Anti-epileptic medicines like phenytoin decrease the levels of metronidazole in the body
  • Concomitant use of methotrexate increases the serum levels of carbamazepine and increases the risk of toxicity
  • Metronidazole increases the levels of anti-cancer medicines like fluorouracil and busulfan in the blood and results in toxic effects in the body
  • Methotrexate when taken with immunosuppressants like cyclosporin increases its levels in blood

Other general Interactions

Metronidazole (Cip)125mg suspension should be avoided in those suffering from Cockayne syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. Metronidazole may cause liver failure and death in patients with Cockayne syndrome.
