Medical Description

Megaferon capsule is a nutritional supplement that combines iron with the vitamins that work alongside it. Doctors commonly advise it when the diet needs topping up with iron. Each capsule supplies iron as ferric maltol, together with folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C and vitamin D2 as ergocalciferol. Iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 are the three nutrients the body draws on to make red blood cells, which is why they are so often combined in a single supplement. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron from the gut, so pairing the two in one capsule makes the iron easier to take in. Vitamin D supports the normal absorption of calcium and the maintenance of bone and muscle. Megaferon is meant to support the diet rather than replace it. Because it contains iron, keep it well out of the reach of children, take it only for as long as your doctor advises, and do not add a second iron or multivitamin product on your own.

Uses

  • Nutritional supplementation of iron, folic acid and vitamin B12.
  • Dietary supplementation in people whose diet is short on iron.
  • Supplementation of vitamin C and vitamin D.
  • Use when your doctor has advised nutritional support based on your blood reports.

Precautions and Warnings

Other General Warnings

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You have a known allergy to any ingredient of this supplement.
  • You have an iron storage disorder such as haemochromatosis or thalassaemia, or you have been told that your iron levels are high.
  • You are already taking another iron, folic acid or multivitamin supplement, so that the same nutrients do not add up twice.
  • You have a stomach ulcer, acidity, or an inflammatory bowel condition such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, so your doctor can confirm this capsule suits you and follow up on how you tolerate it.
  • You have any kidney or liver problem.
  • You are taking a thyroid medicine, an antibiotic or a medicine for acidity, as these and iron affect each other's absorption.
  • You are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, so that your doctor can check the amounts against what you already take.
  • You start experiencing black stools, constipation, loose motions, stomach pain or nausea after starting it.
  • You do not feel any better over the period your doctor advised, kindly contact your doctor for further evaluation.

Directions for Use

  • Take Megaferon capsule exactly as advised by your doctor.
  • Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not open or chew it.
  • It is usually taken once a day, or as advised by your doctor.
  • Take it with food or just after a meal. Iron is gentler on the stomach that way.
  • Try to take it at about the same time each day.
  • Leave a gap of about an hour between this capsule and tea, coffee, milk, antacids or a calcium supplement, as these reduce how much iron your body takes in.
  • Keep taking it for the full period your doctor has advised, even after you start feeling better.

Storage and disposal

  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture.
  • Keep the capsules in the original strip until you take them.
  • Keep it out of the sight and reach of children. Supplements that contain iron can be seriously harmful if a child swallows them.
  • Do not use the capsules after the expiry date printed on the pack.
  • Do not flush unused capsules down the drain. Return them to your pharmacist for safe disposal.

Quick Tips

  • Keep an hour between this capsule and your tea, coffee or milk. Those three are the most common reason an iron supplement quietly fails to work.
  • Antacids and calcium tablets need the time gap. If you take one at night, move the capsule to the morning or as your doctor instructs.
  • Take it after food. Most of the nausea people blame on iron comes from an empty stomach.
  • Black stools are expected on iron and are not a reason to stop. Black tarry stools with stomach pain are, so call your doctor.
  • Finish the full course your doctor set, even once you feel better. Feeling better comes well before the body's iron stores are refilled.
  • Keep the strip out of a child's reach. Iron capsules are one of the commonest causes of serious poisoning in small children.

Ingredients and Benefits

  • Iron, as ferric maltol - the mineral the body needs to make haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
  • Folic acid - a B vitamin the body uses in the normal formation of red blood cells, and one that is advised for any woman who may become pregnant.
  • Vitamin B12 - a B vitamin that takes part in the normal formation of red blood cells and in the working of the nervous system.
  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) - a water-soluble vitamin that also helps the body absorb iron from the gut, which is why it is paired with iron in this capsule.
  • Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) - supports the normal absorption of calcium and the maintenance of bone and muscle.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

It is ferric maltol, a form of iron that is generally easier on the stomach than the older iron salts. That matters because stomach upset is the usual reason people stop taking an iron supplement before it has had time to work. It still needs to be taken with food and away from tea, coffee and milk.
Better not to. Tea, coffee and milk all reduce how much iron your body absorbs, and so do antacids and calcium tablets. Leave about an hour either side of the capsule. This one habit makes more difference than most people expect.
That is the iron, and it is harmless. Iron that the body has not absorbed darkens the stool. Do call your doctor if the stools are black and tarry and you also have stomach pain, or if you feel unusually weak or breathless.
Not without asking your doctor. Feeling better comes well before the body has refilled its iron stores, so stopping early is why people so often slip back. Your doctor will usually want to repeat a blood test before deciding.
