Meftal Spas Tablet
Description
Meftal-Spas tablet is one of the effective medicines (efficacy may vary from person to person) used to treat abdominal (tummy) pain, dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps or period pain), and colicky pain. Abdominal pain occurs between the chest and pelvic region (below the belly button and leg). Menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea, are characterised by cramps and pain during menstruation. A colicky pain is a form of severe pain that starts and stops abruptly.
The Meftal-Spas tablet is specifically designed as a dual-action painkiller to combat debilitating pain at its source. This tablet is not just a painkiller; it is a combination medicine that tackles both the pain and the muscle spasms that cause it. Meftal-Spas composition consists of two drugs - dicyclomine (anti-spasmodic) and mefenamic acid (Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug - NSAID).
Dicyclomine works by directly relaxing the smooth muscles in the abdomen and uterus that are clenched. Mefenamic acid is a painkiller that works by blocking the effects of chemical messengers (prostaglandins), thereby reducing mild to moderate pain and inflammation at the injured or damaged site. Together, Meftal-Spas tablets help relieve pain.
You are advised to take Meftal-Spas Tablet as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you, depending on your medical condition. In some cases, Meftal-Spas Tablet may cause common side effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, dry mouth, and weakness. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side effects persistently.
Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Meftal-Spas Tablet may cause dizziness and drowsiness, so drive with caution. Meftal-Spas Tablet is not recommended for children as safety and efficacy have not been established. Avoid consuming alcohol with Meftal-Spas Tablet, as it could lead to increased drowsiness and dizziness, it might also increase the risk of stomach bleeding. Keep your doctor informed about your health condition and any medications you are taking to rule out any potential side effects/interactions.

Mode of Action
How Does It Work?
- The Meftal-Spas tablet provides relief from pain as its composition has two ingredients that work in different ways. Together, Mefenamic Acid targets the chemical cause of pain, while Dicyclomine targets the physical muscle cramps....
- Mefenamic Acid (250mg): This is a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID). When you have your period, your body releases chemicals called prostaglandins. These chemicals cause the muscles in your uterus to contract, leading to cramps and pain. Mefenamic Acid works by blocking the action of prostaglandins, thereby effectively reducing both pain and inflammation....
- Dicyclomine (10mg): This is an antispasmodic that acts as a muscle relaxant, sending a message directly to the muscles that are clenching, telling them to "unclench" and relax. This action directly relieves the physical spasm, which is the source of the cramping sensation....
Interactions
Interactions with other medicines
- Other NSAIDs (Like Ibuprofen, Aspirin): Taking Meftal-Spas tablet with other NSAIDs can increase the risk of ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Blood Thinners (Like Warfarin): Together, your chances of bleeding increase drastically.
- Oral Steroids: Meftal-Spas with oral steroids can increase the risk of stomach ulcers.
- Certain Antidepressants (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor - SSRIs): With certain antidepressants, Meftal-Spas can increase the risk of bleeding.
- Interaction with Alcohol: Combining alcohol with a Meftal-Spas tablet is risky. It can increase the risk of stomach irritation. It also exacerbates side effects such as drowsiness and dizziness.
- Interaction with Antacids: Some antacids can interfere with the absorption of Dicyclomine.
