Medical Description
Medistat nasal spray is a prescription medication used as preoperative sedation before a small procedure. It is used for managing acute or sudden epilepsy or seizures (fits). It also reduces anxiety and has amnesia (loss of memory) properties.
Medistat nasal spray consists of midazolam as its active ingredient. Midazolam works by increasing the activity of a chemical substance in the brain, which is responsible for causing drowsiness, calming effect, relaxing muscles, and reducing anxiety. It also helps lower the nerve cells’ electrical activity in the brain. This medicine does have some side effects. But most of them do not require any medical intervention, as they disappear once you are used to the dosage. Consult a doctor if they persist or get worse.
You can take Medistat nasal spray in the exact way prescribed by the doctor. Do not increase the dose or use it more often than advised. This medication is supposed to be for short term use and can cause dependency issues. Do not stop without informing the doctor, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms such as vomiting, nervousness, or sweating.
Uses
- As per USFDA, Medistat nasal spray is used for managing acute episodes of seizure disorder in patients who are 12 years of age and older and who are also taking other antiepileptic (antiseizure) medication.
- It is also indicated as a local anaesthetic before a small procedure to reduce anxiety.
Contraindications
If you are allergic to any of the ingredients of Medistat nasal spray.
If you have acute angle glaucoma (increased pressure inside the eye), this medicine worsens the condition.
If you have a history of addictive tendencies, this medicine can cause dependency.
If you are in shock or coma, this spray can worsen the condition.
If you are a child less than 12 years of age, Medistat nasal spray is not recommended.
If you are pregnant or planning for a pregnancy, this medicine causes unwanted side effects in the foetus (unborn baby).
If you have a history of respiratory depression, Medistat nasal spray can worsen the condition.

Directions for Use

- You can take it with or without food.

Overdose
- Overdose of Medistat nasal spray can cause symptoms such as uncoordinated muscle movements, low blood pressure, mental confusion, shallow breathing, difficulty staying awake, slurred speech, impaired reflexes, dizziness, reduced balance, speech disorder, respiratory arrest, coma and death. In case of Medistat nasal spray overdose, seek immediate medical treatment from the nearest medical centre.
Missed a Dose
If you have missed a dose of Medistat nasal spray, you can take it when you remember it. But, skip the missed dose if it's already time for the next one. Do not take two doses at a time, as this can lead to an overdose.

How Does It Work?
Medistat nasal spray contains midazolam as its active ingredient. It works by increasing the activity of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), a natural chemical substance in the body. It binds to specific receptors in several sites in the brain and central nervous system. It is responsible for suppressing abnormal activity in the nerve cells in the brain. It also has anti-anxiety, sedative, muscle relaxant, and amnesic (memory loss) properties.

Interactions with other medicines
- Do not take Medistat nasal spray with other depressant medications. It can cause overdose and serious side effects.
- Using this medicine with others that cause drowsiness, such as antihistamine (allergy medication), pain relievers (opioid), cough medicines, and muscle relaxants, can cause serious side effects like slow breathing and severe drowsiness.
- Do not use this medicine if you are already taking medications for sleep or anxiety.
- This medicine can reduce the effectiveness of certain medicines like HIV medicines and antifungals.
Interactions with food items
- Avoid grapefruit and its juice, as it can interfere with the functioning of Medistat nasal spray and cause serious side effects.
