Medical Description

Insugen N Cartiage injection is used to help control high blood sugar in diabetes. It contains insulin human isophane, a longer-acting form of insulin that replaces or supplements insulin made by the body. Insulin helps glucose move from the blood into cells, where it can be used for energy, and reduces glucose released by the liver. This injection is given under the skin by the technique taught by a doctor or nurse. It must not be injected into a vein or muscle.

Uses

  • Diabetes mellitus: Insulin human isophane helps lower high blood sugar when the body makes too little insulin or needs insulin replacement.

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use it. Do not use insulin while your blood sugar is low. Tell your doctor before use if you have kidney, liver, thyroid or adrenal problems.

Side effects

  • Injection-site reaction: Repeated injections in one place can cause pain, redness or swelling. Rotate sites and tell your doctor if the skin becomes persistently thickened, lumpy or sunken.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Insulin may be used during pregnancy when prescribed. Blood sugar needs can change during pregnancy, so attend all monitoring appointments.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Insulin can generally be used while breastfeeding, but your doctor may need to monitor your blood sugar and adjust treatment.

Driving

Driving

Low blood sugar can impair driving. Check your blood sugar before driving, carry sugar and stop immediately if you feel dizzy, sleepy, sweaty or confused.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Alcohol may increase or prolong low blood sugar and can make blood sugar control less predictable. Ask your doctor before drinking alcohol.

Directions for Use

This injection is given under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm. A doctor or nurse should teach you the technique before any home use. Do not inject it into a vein or muscle. Rotate injection sites and never share needles, syringes or injection devices.

Storage and disposal

Store the unopened container in a refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C. Do not freeze it and protect it from light. Keep it out of children's reach. Follow the pack instructions for an opened container, and dispose of needles and unused medicine safely.

Quick Tips

  • Check your blood sugar as advised and keep a record.
  • Carry a fast-acting source of sugar for low blood sugar episodes.
  • Learn the early signs of low blood sugar, including sweating, shaking and hunger.
  • Rotate injection sites to reduce skin problems.
  • Never share needles or injection devices.
  • Keep regular meals and do not skip food after using insulin unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much insulin may cause low blood sugar with sweating, shaking, hunger, dizziness, confusion, blurred vision, fainting or seizures. Take a fast-acting source of sugar if you are awake and able to swallow, and obtain urgent help. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

A missed insulin dose can cause high blood sugar and may become dangerous. Contact your doctor for instructions rather than changing the schedule yourself. If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The active ingredient, insulin human isophane, acts like the body's natural insulin. It helps muscle and fat cells take glucose from the blood and reduces the amount of glucose released by the liver. This lowers blood sugar and helps the body use glucose for energy.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Insugen N Cartiage injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, other diabetes medicines, fluoxetine and other medicines for low mood, salicylates used for pain or fever, ramipril and lisinopril may increase the risk of low blood sugar. Oral contraceptives, thiazide medicines, steroids, thyroid hormone medicines, octreotide and lanreotide may raise blood sugar or change insulin needs. Pioglitazone may increase the risk of fluid retention and heart failure when used with insulin. Beta blockers, clonidine and guanethidine can hide warning signs of low blood sugar, allowing it to become severe.

Interactions with food items

Alcohol can increase the risk of low blood sugar and make blood sugar control less predictable. Ask your doctor before drinking alcohol, and do not skip meals after using insulin unless your doctor advises otherwise.
