Medical Description

Hemilift injection is used to replace iron in iron-deficiency anaemia when the body does not have enough iron to make healthy red blood cells. It contains iron sucrose, an iron replacement medicine that supplies iron for haemoglobin formation and oxygen transport. Restoring iron stores can improve weakness and tiredness linked with iron deficiency. Hemilift injection is given into a vein by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, and it is not used for anaemia caused by another condition. The cause of anaemia must be confirmed before treatment.

Uses

  • Iron-deficiency anaemia: Low iron limits haemoglobin and oxygen delivery, which can cause tiredness and weakness; this injection restores iron so red blood cells can form.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Hemilift injection. Do not receive it if your anaemia is not caused by iron deficiency or if your body already has too much iron. Tell your doctor about previous reactions to iron given into a vein, an infection, liver disease or kidney disease before treatment.

Side effects

  • Injection-site reaction: Pain, swelling or redness can occur where the medicine enters the vein. Tell the nurse if the reaction spreads or becomes severe.
  • Nausea: Iron administration can briefly upset the stomach and cause queasiness. Tell the healthcare professional if vomiting occurs or you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea: Iron sucrose may disturb the digestive system and loosen stools. Report repeated vomiting or severe diarrhoea promptly.
  • Headache, dizziness or low blood pressure: A temporary fall in blood pressure may cause light-headedness or head pain. Sit or lie down and tell the nurse immediately.
  • Pain, itching or swelling: Itching, pain in an arm or leg, joint or back pain, muscle cramps, chest pain or limb swelling may occur. Report chest pain, breathing difficulty or sudden swelling immediately.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. It is given into a vein, and you may be watched during and after administration for changes in blood pressure or signs of an allergic reaction.

Storage and disposal

The healthcare facility will store and dispose of Hemilift injection according to its handling requirements. Do not use an ampoule or vial that is damaged, expired or discoloured.

Quick Tips

  • Attend every appointment arranged for iron replacement and blood tests.
  • Tell the nurse immediately about itching, rash, chest discomfort or breathing difficulty during administration.
  • Report dizziness or faintness promptly because blood pressure can fall.
  • Eat a balanced diet with pulses, leafy vegetables, beans and other iron-rich foods.
  • Do not start oral iron or another iron injection without medical advice.
  • Seek emergency medical help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips or throat.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much Hemilift injection may cause excess iron, low blood pressure or serious allergic effects. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Iron sucrose supplies iron that the body uses to make haemoglobin and new red blood cells. As iron stores recover, the blood can carry oxygen more effectively and symptoms linked with iron deficiency may improve.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Hemilift injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell them about oral iron products and other iron preparations, because your doctor may need to change the iron treatment plan.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known. A balanced diet containing iron-rich foods may support recovery but does not replace prescribed treatment.
