Medical Description

Geoxin Injection is used for selected cases of heart failure and atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm that can make the heart beat too fast. It contains digoxin, a heart medicine that strengthens each heartbeat and slows some electrical signals in the heart. By improving pumping and helping control a fast irregular rhythm, it may ease breathlessness, tiredness and swelling related to heart failure. Geoxin injection is given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic, with monitoring because the safe amount varies between people. Blood tests, kidney checks and heart-rhythm checks may be needed.

Uses

  • Atrial fibrillation: This irregular heartbeat can reduce efficient heart pumping; digoxin slows the heart rate so the ventricles have more time to fill and pump blood.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, do not use Geoxin injection. Tell your doctor if you have certain irregular heart rhythms, heart block, kidney disease, thyroid disease or abnormal body-salt levels. The doctor will check whether digoxin is suitable before treatment.

Side effects

  • Nausea or vomiting: Digoxin can upset the stomach; persistent vomiting can disturb body salts and should be reported promptly.
  • Dizziness: Digoxin can make some people feel lightheaded; sit down safely and tell your doctor if the symptom recurs.
  • Vision changes: Blurred or unusually coloured vision can occur when digoxin affects the body too strongly; contact your doctor immediately.
  • Confusion: New confusion or unusual weakness may accompany harmful digoxin effects; seek prompt medical assessment rather than waiting for it to pass.
  • Irregular heartbeat: New palpitations, a very slow or fast heartbeat or fainting can signal a serious rhythm problem; seek emergency medical help.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy. Geoxin injection may carry a risk to the developing baby, so the doctor will use it only after weighing the expected benefit and possible risk.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding. Digoxin passes into breast milk in small amounts and is generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but the baby should be observed for feeding problems or unusual symptoms.

Driving

Driving

Geoxin injection may cause dizziness or visual changes. Do not drive or operate machinery if your vision is abnormal, you feel dizzy or your heartbeat feels irregular.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Avoid alcohol while receiving Geoxin injection unless your doctor specifically says it is safe. Alcohol can worsen dizziness and make heart symptoms harder to recognise.

Directions for Use

This injection will be given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic. Do not self-inject. Your healthcare team may check your pulse, heart rhythm, kidney function and body salts before or during treatment. Do not receive an extra injection unless your doctor instructs you.

Storage and disposal

Store Geoxin injection in a cool, dry place in the original container, away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children. Do not use a damaged container. Healthcare staff should dispose of the used container safely.

Quick Tips

  • Keep all appointments for heart-rhythm, kidney-function and blood tests.
  • Tell your doctor promptly about vomiting, diarrhoea or poor appetite.
  • Report blurred or coloured vision, fainting or new palpitations without delay.
  • Do not start painkillers, antibiotics or supplements without checking with your doctor.
  • Ask your doctor how to follow your heart-care plan, including suitable food and activity.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much digoxin can cause nausea, vomiting, vision changes, confusion or dangerous heart rhythms. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Digoxin strengthens the force of the heart's contractions, helping it pump blood more effectively. It also slows some electrical signals through the heart, which can help control a fast heartbeat in atrial fibrillation. The medicine leaves the body mainly through the kidneys, so kidney function and blood levels may need monitoring.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Geoxin works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention medicines for irregular heart rhythms, some antibiotics and medicines that affect kidney function, as they can raise digoxin levels; water tablets can lower body salts and increase harmful effects; medicines for stomach acidity, calcium products and fibre supplements can change absorption; thyroid treatment and blood-pressure medicines can change its effect.

Interactions with food items

Large changes in fibre intake may reduce or alter how much digoxin is absorbed. Vomiting or diarrhoea can lower body salts and increase the risk of harmful heart-rhythm effects. Tell your doctor about herbal products and mineral supplements.
