Medical Description

Chrono tablet is used to control epilepsy and seizures and may also be prescribed for manic episodes in bipolar disorder or migraine prevention. It contains a combination of sodium valproate and valproic acid, which together provide valproate to calm excessive electrical activity in the brain. This action reduces abnormal nerve firing and helps stabilise seizures, mood activity or migraine-related processes. Chrono tablet is taken by mouth with water and food under close medical supervision, and it must not be stopped suddenly.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

Do not use Chrono tablet during pregnancy. Valproate can seriously harm an unborn baby. If you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, contact your doctor promptly and do not stop suddenly without medical advice.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

Valproate can pass into breast milk. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding so the baby can be monitored for unusual sleepiness, poor feeding or yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Driving

Driving

Chrono tablet may cause sleepiness, dizziness or tremor. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Do not drink alcohol while using Chrono tablet because it may worsen sleepiness, dizziness and poor coordination.

Directions for Use

Take this medicine as a whole with sufficient water and with food. Do not chew, crush or break the tablet. Take Chrono tablet exactly as prescribed and do not stop it suddenly, because seizures or mood symptoms may return or worsen. Your doctor may arrange blood tests during treatment.

Storage and disposal

Store Chrono tablet in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children. Do not use expired tablets, and ask a pharmacist how to dispose of unused medicine.

Quick Tips

  • Do not stop Chrono tablet suddenly without medical advice.
  • Take it consistently with food and attend recommended blood tests.
  • Avoid alcohol and activities requiring full alertness if you feel sleepy or dizzy.
  • Tell your doctor promptly about severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting or yellowing of the eyes.
  • Discuss effective contraception and safer treatment choices with a specialist if pregnancy is possible.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much may cause marked sleepiness, vomiting, confusion, tremor or loss of consciousness. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Sodium valproate and valproic acid provide valproate, which increases the brain's natural calming signals and reduces excessive nerve firing. This steadies abnormal electrical activity, helping prevent seizures. The same stabilising effect can help control manic episodes and reduce processes linked with migraine attacks.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Chrono tablet works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, other seizure medicines such as phenytoin or carbamazepine may alter effects or increase side effects; warfarin and other blood thinners may increase bleeding risk; aspirin may raise valproate-related effects; lithium may increase adverse effects; sodium phenylbutyrate may increase ammonia levels; and carbapenem antibiotics such as meropenem or imipenem can sharply lower valproate levels and reduce seizure control.
