Medical Description

Cetapin M is an anti-diabetic medication containing metformin and pioglitazone. It is used to treat high blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus. The drug is a combination of metformin and pioglitazone which improves the utilisation of insulin in the body. Common side effects of this medication include dizziness, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, hypoglycemia, and anaemia. The dose of the duration of this medicine varies among individuals depending on the severity and condition it is being used for. Do not take more than the prescribed dose of medication within 24 hours. If you observe any severe symptoms or have overdosed on the medication, contact your physician immediately or rush to the nearest hospital.

Cetapin P tablet is not indicated in pregnancy as it can show adverse effects to the developing baby. Instead, consult your doctor for controlling your blood sugar levels in pregnancy, which can be done through insulin.

Directions for Use

Overdose

Overdosing can result in severe low blood sugar levels, which the doctor requires close monitoring and treatment. If overdosing occurs, consult your doctor immediately. In addition, dizziness and loss of consciousness can be seen with overdose.

Missed a Dose

If the dose is missed, the medication should be taken as soon as possible. Make sure you keep the proper time interval between two doses. If the time interval is near the second dose, skip the previous dose and follow the regular schedule.

How Does It Work?

Pioglitazone works by increasing the sensitivity of insulin in the body. In addition, metformin is given as an anti-hyperglycemic that acts by improving insulin's binding and peripheral tissue sensitivity and decreasing glucose absorption.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Cetapin M can interact with carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, which is used for glaucoma and can cause lactic acidosis
  • Using this medication with other hypoglycemia can cause severe hypoglycemia
  • It is not advisable to use this medication with bosentan, which can elevate the liver enzymes
  • Strong CYP2C8 inhibitors like gemfibrozil may increase the concentration of pioglitazone
  • Concomitant use of CYP2C8 inducers like rifampin may decrease the concentration of pioglitazone
  • Concomitant use of cimetidine with this medication may increase the accumulation of metformin
