Medical Description

Byetta Penfill injection is used with diet and physical activity to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It contains exenatide, a medicine that helps the pancreas release insulin when blood sugar rises, reduces signals that raise blood sugar, slows the movement of food through the stomach and may reduce appetite. These actions help control blood sugar after meals and across the day, while weight management may improve for some people. Byetta injection is given under the skin with a pen device after a doctor or nurse has taught you or your caregiver the technique. It is not a replacement for insulin when insulin treatment is needed.

Uses

  • Type 2 diabetes: Adults with this condition may have persistently high blood sugar because insulin does not work well; Byetta helps lower it as part of diet and activity.
  • After-meal blood sugar control: Exenatide helps the body release more insulin when blood sugar rises after eating.
  • Weight management support: Byetta Penfill injection may reduce appetite and support weight management as part of a diabetes care plan.

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

Pregnancy

The safety of Byetta Penfill injection during pregnancy is not established. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or become pregnant during treatment.

Breast Feeding

Breast Feeding

It is not known whether exenatide passes into breast milk. Ask your doctor before using Byetta Penfill injection while breastfeeding.

Driving

Driving

Low or high blood sugar can affect concentration and driving. Check your blood sugar as advised and do not drive if you feel confused, dizzy or unwell.

Alcohol

Alcohol

Safety with alcohol is not established. Alcohol can make blood sugar less predictable and may worsen low blood sugar with other diabetes treatment. Ask your doctor about alcohol use during treatment.

Directions for Use

Byetta injection is injected under the skin using the pen device. A doctor or nurse must show you or your caregiver how to use it before home treatment. Use a new needle as advised, do not share the pen, and follow the treatment plan given by your doctor. Store unused pens in a refrigerator and do not freeze them. Do not stop treatment without medical advice.

Storage and disposal

Store unused Byetta Penfill injection in a refrigerator and do not freeze it. Protect it from light and keep it out of children's reach. Follow the pack instructions for an in-use pen. Dispose of needles in a sharps container and discard expired or damaged pens safely.

Quick Tips

  • Check your blood sugar as advised by your diabetes team.
  • Learn the pen technique from a healthcare professional before home use.
  • Do not share the pen or needles with another person.
  • Drink enough fluids if nausea or vomiting occurs, and seek advice if you cannot keep fluids down.
  • Know the warning signs of low blood sugar, such as sweating, shaking, hunger or confusion.
  • Keep follow-up appointments so kidney function and blood sugar control can be reviewed.

Dosage

Overdose

Too much exenatide may cause severe nausea, vomiting, low blood sugar or dehydration. If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

Exenatide acts like a natural body hormone that helps control blood sugar. It increases insulin release when blood sugar is high, reduces the body's signals that raise blood sugar, slows the movement of food through the stomach and may reduce appetite. These effects help improve blood sugar control and may support weight management.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Byetta injection works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, mention insulin and other medicines that lower blood sugar, disopyramide, asparaginase, fenfluramine, acarbose and alogliptin, because low blood sugar risk or treatment effects may change. Byetta injection can delay absorption of medicines taken by mouth, so your doctor may give separate timing instructions.
