Medical Description

Angicef injection is a combination antibiotic used by healthcare professionals to treat selected bacterial infections. It contains ceftriaxone, which stops bacteria from building the protective covering needed for survival, and sulbactam, which blocks bacterial enzymes that can inactivate ceftriaxone. By protecting ceftriaxone from these enzymes, sulbactam can improve its activity against some bacteria. Angicef injection is given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital or clinic as an injection and is not for self-injection. It should be used only for a diagnosed bacterial infection because it does not treat viral illnesses.

Uses

  • Lung infections: Bacteria in the lungs can cause cough, fever or breathing problems; ceftriaxone with sulbactam may be used when the bacteria are susceptible.
  • Ear, nose and throat infections: Selected bacterial infections in these areas can cause pain, discharge or congestion; this injection may help clear them in clinical care.
  • Urinary tract infections: Bacteria in the urinary tract can cause burning, urgency or pain; this injection treats selected infections when the responsible bacteria respond to it.
  • Skin and soft-tissue infections: Bacterial infections of the skin and tissues beneath it can cause redness, swelling or pain; sulbactam helps protect ceftriaxone during treatment.

Contraindications

If you are allergic to any ingredient of this medicine, including ceftriaxone or sulbactam, do not receive it. Tell your doctor if you have had a serious allergic reaction to penicillin or another cephalosporin antibiotic, because a related reaction may occur.

Side effects

  • Diarrhoea: Antibiotics can disturb bowel bacteria and cause loose stools. Seek urgent medical help for bloody stools, severe cramps or persistent watery diarrhoea.
  • Nausea: Treatment may upset the stomach. Tell the healthcare team if nausea interferes with drinking or eating.
  • Injection-site discomfort: Pain, redness or swelling can occur where the injection is given. Tell the nurse if the reaction is severe or spreads.
  • Allergic reaction: An itchy rash, facial or throat swelling, or breathing difficulty can signal a serious allergy. Get emergency medical help immediately.

Overdose

If you think you have taken too much of this medicine, contact your doctor immediately or visit the nearest hospital.

Missed a Dose

If you missed any dose of medicine, take it as soon as you remember. If it is time for your next dose, then skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dose schedule. Do not take a double dose of medicine to compensate for the missed one.

How does this medicine work?

The ceftriaxone component stops bacteria from forming the protective covering they need to survive. Sulbactam blocks bacterial enzymes that can inactivate ceftriaxone. This allows ceftriaxone to work against some bacteria that might otherwise resist it.

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way Angicef works. Tell your doctor about all the medicines, vitamins and supplements you take. In particular, tell them if you receive calcium-containing intravenous fluids, use blood thinners such as warfarin, or take other antibiotics. Calcium-containing fluids may not be compatible with ceftriaxone through the same intravenous line, while warfarin may require clotting checks.

Interactions with food items

No specific food interaction is known for this injection.
