Medical Description

Amipride Tablet is used to treat a mental illness called schizophrenia (a condition in which the person cannot differentiate between natural and non-real). Amipride Tablet belongs to a class of medications called antipsychotics that reduce abnormal and uncontrollable thoughts in the brain. Amipride Tablets should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. The duration and dose of taking an Amipride Tablet vary depending on the patient’s condition and age. Side effects of Amipride Tablet include shaking, stiffness and pain of muscles, slow movement, producing excessive saliva than usual or restlessness. It is advised to consult your doctor before starting treatment with Amipride Tablet and get complete information on its potential side effects and benefits. Amipride Tablets may also interact negatively and produce life-threatening side effects when taken with certain medications such as those used to treat anxiety, depression, pain, migraine, high blood pressure and allergy. Therefore it is suggested to talk to your doctor about all medications you are taking or planning to take.

Contraindications

  • If you’re allergic to amisulpride or any other ingredients of this medicine.
  • If you have pheochromocytoma (a tumour on the adrenal gland), you’re taking antiarrhythmic medications for controlling the heart rhythm, like quinidine, disopyramide, procainamide amiodarone, sotalol.
  • If you’re taking bepridil (calcium channel blockers used for chest pain)
  • If you’re taking cisapride for gastrointestinal problems
  • If you’re taking sultopride used in schizophrenia
  • If you’re taking thioridazine used for schizophrenia and psychosis
  • If you’re taking IV erythromycin and sparfloxacin used in infections
  • If you’re taking IV vincamine used to improve blood flow in the brain
  • If you’re taking halofantrine used to treat malaria
  • If you’re taking pentamidine used in chest infections
  • If you’re taking levodopa, a medicine to treat Parkinson's disease

Pregnancy

You should not take Amipride Tablets during pregnancy. Taking Amipride tablets during pregnancy, especially during the last three months, may cause problems in the newborn baby, such as muscle weakness and breathing difficulties.

Breast Feeding

No. Avoid taking Amipride Tablets during breastfeeding as its active ingredient, called haloperidol, is secreted in the breast milk. It may pass on to the baby and develop side effects.

Driving

You should avoid driving when taking this medicine as it may produce sleepiness and loss of alertness. It may also affect your ability to think and make decisions.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol while taking Amipride Tablets may cause excessive sleepiness and loss of alertness. Hence, you should avoid taking alcohol with Amipride Tablets.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if
  • You suffer from kidney disease
  • You’ve a history of epilepsy or seizures (fits)
  • You suffer from Parkinson's disease
  • You have an unusual heart rate (rhythm)
  • You have a slow heartbeat (less than 55 beats per minute)
  • You’ve low potassium levels in your blood
  • You’ve heart problems or your family has a history of heart problems
  • You are diabetic
  • You’ve a low number of white blood cells.

Directions for Use

  • Amipride Tablet must be taken as per the doctor’s prescription.
  • Amipride tablets must be taken without food.
  • Make sure to swallow the Amipride Tablet as a whole and do not chew, crush or break it.
  • Amipride tablets must be taken at the same time as per prescription.
  • Do not change the dose or frequency of taking an Amipride Tablet without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not stop taking Amipride Tablet on your own, and continue taking it as long as your doctor recommends.

Storage and disposal

Store Amipride Tablets in a dry place, away from sunlight, at room temperature, away from the reach of children. It must be disposed of as biomedical waste so that it is out of reach of children and cannot be consumed by pets.

If you take more tablets than you should, visit a doctor immediately or go to an emergency hospital as soon as possible. You should take the medicine package with you for the doctor to know which medicine you have taken in excess. Overdose of Amipride may result in symptoms that may include feeling restless or shaky, rigid muscles, and drowsy or sleepy, leading to a loss of consciousness.

Missed a Dose

If you’ve missed a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if the time is for the next dose, avoid taking the missed dose and continue with the scheduled dose. Taking a double dose may cause an overdose of this medicine.

Interactions with other medicines

  • Amipride Tablet must not be taken with medicines used for heart problems such as amiodarone, ibutilide, quinidine and sotalol, as it may cause the heart problems to increase and become worse.
  • Avoid taking Amipride Tablets with medicines for depression such as citalopram and escitalopram. It may worsen the heart condition and produce symptoms of an overdose of Amipride like sleepiness and breathing difficulties.
  • Medicines for nausea and vomiting like dolasetron; medicine to lower blood pressure such as bepridil; painkillers such as methadone must not be taken with Amipride tablet as it may cause problems in the heart.

Interactions with food items

  • Amipride Tablet may interact adversely with St. John's Wort, herbal medicine for depression management, to produce side effects.

You should not stop taking Amipride tablets without consulting your doctor as you suffer from withdrawal symptoms such as nausea (feeling sick), excessive sweating, disturbed sleep, and stiffness in muscles.

Amisulpride tablets should not be given to children under 18 as the efficacy and safety of this medicine have not been established in the children.

Amipride tablets contain lactose. If your doctor has asked you not to take certain sugars, you may be allergic to lactose. Take precautions and consult a doctor before taking this medicine.
