Medical Description

The composition of Acetazolamide 250 Mg Tablet 10 is similar to sulphonamides; hence, it is a derivative of it. Medically, it belongs to the group of diuretics or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors. The generic name of Acetazolamide 250 Mg Tablet 10 is Acetazolamide.

Uses

The uses of Acetazolamide 250 Mg Tablet 10 include the treatment of: an eye condition called glaucoma (in which there is an increased eye pressure); oedema (abnormal fluid retention in various parts of the body); some types of convulsions; and cases of congestive heart failure.

Contraindications

The medicine should not be taken by those who are allergic to it or any other sulphonamide derivatives. Some types of glaucoma cannot be treated by this medicine (please consult your doctor). Patients of severe kidneys or liver disorders should not take this tablet. Those with reduced sodium or potassium levels in blood should not be allowed to take this medicine.

Side effects

The side effects that may arise after taking Acetazolamide 250 Mg Tablet 10 are headache, confusion and visual disturbances. Patients may also experience nausea, vomiting, appetite loss and gastric disturbances like diarrhoea and constipation. Urination may increase, and there is an imbalance in the sodium/potassium levels in the body. Some people also experience tingling sensation in the legs. More severe side effects include liver problems like jaundice.

Pregnancy

The medicine may be unsafe for pregnant women and should only be taken upon medical advice.

Breast Feeding

Acetazolamide 250 Mg Tablet 10 passes on through the breast milk to the infant in small quantities; hence, it may be taken if advised by a doctor.

Driving

If you experience any mental confusion, dizziness or visual problems after the administration of this medicine, do not drive.

Alcohol

Side effects like nausea, vision problems, dizziness and confusion may occur if alcohol is consumed with the medicine.

Directions for Use

Take the medicinal tablet as prescribed by a doctor. It should be swallowed (not crushed or chewed) whole with water. The dosage varies from one to four times a day as per the condition. Patients on this medicine should have plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

The medicinal tablet should be stored at room temperature away from sunlight, moisture and the reach of children. It should be disposed via proper disposal methods as discussed with your pharmacist.

Missed a Dose

If a dose is missed, it can be taken whenever you recall the dose. However, if it is less than six hours to your upcoming dose, then the missed dose should not be taken. Double doses are to be strictly avoided.

As a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, it hinders with the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. This results in the reduction of fluid buildup, which is the main problem in the conditions it is used to treat.

Interactions with other medicines

It is crucial for you to inform your doctor your complete medical/surgical history, especially if you are taking medications for hypertension, blood-thinning medicines, medicines to control blood sugar levels, medicines like glycosides for cardiac issues, anticonvulsants, aspirin or any similar medicines for oral ulcers, prednisolone or other steroids and any other medicines of the same group also used against glaucoma.

It is important to inform your doctor about all your medications taken for other conditions. Though, the medicine is not known to worsen another condition, it can alter/decrease the effectiveness of other medicines.

Those individuals who are above the age of 60 years are more susceptible to the side effects of this medicine like fluctuating sodium and potassium levels. Hence, it should be given only upon medical advice.

The medicine usually takes two to four hours to act; however, it may vary according to the dosage schedule and condition of your disease.
