Molecule Description
Degarelix is an anticancer medicine in the class of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) receptor antagonists. It is used for the management of adult patients with advanced hormone-dependent prostate cancer.
It blocks GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, rapidly reducing the signals that stimulate the testes to produce testosterone. Lowering testosterone levels reduces the hormonal stimulation of prostate cancer cells.
Long-term hormone-suppressing therapy with Degarelix may increase the risk of irregular heartbeat. If you develop symptoms like a fast, irregular heartbeat or fainting during treatment, tell your doctor immediately.
Degarelix is given as an injection as directed by your doctor in a hospital or clinic setting.
It can cause side effects like hot flushes, weight gain, and injection-site reactions like pain, redness, and swelling. If you develop symptoms like chest discomfort, unusual bone pain, increased thirst or urination, report them to your doctor.
Inform your doctor about any medical conditions like heartbeat problems, diabetes, liver or kidney disease, diseases affecting bone health like osteoporosis, or any severe allergic reactions, and all the medicines you are currently taking. This medicine is indicated for adult men with prostate cancer.
