Molecule Description

Cefpodoxime Proxetil is used to treat infections caused by bacteria such as pneumonia, bronchitis and other infections of the nose, throat, skin, urinary tract, etc. It belongs to the antibiotic group of medicines. Cefpodoxime Proxetil is available in the form of tablet, syrup, tabcap. Uses

Cefpodoxime Proxetil is used for the treatment of respiratory tract infection like bronchitis, pneumonia and infections of the ear, tonsils, sinuses, throat, skin, urinary tract, etc.

Contraindications

When should one not use Cefpodoxime Proxetil

If you are allergic to cefpodoxime proxetil or similar medicines like penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.

Side effects

Common side effects of this drug are:

Nausea
Vomiting
Stomach pain
Diarrhoea
Oral and vaginal fungal infection

Precautions and Warnings

Pregnancy

It is not advised to take cefpodoxime proxetil during pregnancy until it is considered essential by the doctor and potential risks justify the benefits.

Breast Feeding

Cefpodoxime Proxetil passes into the breastmilk in small quantities. However, this medicine can be used while breastfeeding if considered essential by the doctor. In case of diarrhoea or fungal infection in the breastfed baby, consult your doctor for further information.

Driving

Cefpodoxime Proxetil may cause dizziness, thus you need to be cautious while driving.

Alcohol

Avoid consuming alcohol with cefpodoxime proxetil, as it may worsen the side effects.

Other General Warnings

Talk to your doctor if

You have a history of allergy to medicines called cephalosporins or penicillins
You have any problems with your kidney, stomach or intestine
You are using any other antibacterial medicines
You experience watery and bloody diarrhoea
Do not use cefpodoxime proxetil for a prolonged duration

Interactions

Interactions with other medicines

Some medicines can affect the way cefpodoxime proxetil works or this medicine itself can reduce the effectiveness of other medicines taken at the same time.
Tell your doctor about all the medicines, supplements or herbals you are currently taking or might take to avoid any possible interaction.
Especially if you are taking medicines to treat gout or taking antacids, blood-thinning medicines.

Dosage

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, headache, stomach pain, severe diarrhoea, fits. Seek urgent medical help if you suspect an overdose.

Missed a Dose

If you have missed any dose of cefpodoxime proxetil, then take it as soon as you remember. If it is already time for the next dose, then skip the missed dose and follow the regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one.
